Are you looking for new markets or want to pitch a long-form project? Fall is a great time to reboot your writing business. And the best part is that you don't have to leave your desk to make it happen! Sign-ups are rolling in from editors and agents for the next Virtual Client Connections event, which will be held Oct. 3-6 between noon and 4 p.m. EST. Modern Farmer, Pet360.com (publisher of PawCulture.com), Care.com and SAGE Business Researcher are some of the markets in need of writers, and meeting with ASJA members for this next VCC. Also, a literary agent is actively looking for journalists who want to publish fiction and non-fiction books. Note that registration for the October VCC will be first-come, first-served, instead of a lottery. Be sure to read the VCC FAQS for detailed information on the event. The list of editors participating and detailed registration instructions has been posted on the VCC page.
The first-come, first-served registration for the October VCC will open on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. Eastern and the link for the registration will be posted on the VCC website when it is live. Please note that you can only sign up for one editor the first 24 hours of registration. If an editor’s spots are filled up, Waiting List Only will be added to their name in the registration dropdown box. On Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 2 pm Eastern (after the registration has been open 24 hours to give all members a chance to sign up for one editor), members can sign up for additional appointments with editors that still have open appointments. Since you do not need a password to sign up through the Google Form, members who are unable to be online at this time can have a friend or family member sign up for them.
If you have any questions or concerns, email kristinehansenwriter@gmail.com.

If you're like many freelancers, you know what you’re worth but might be too insecure, uncomfortable, or shy to ask for better money, rights, or deadlines. Speaking up for what you want takes practice and courage – along with an understanding of how to negotiate. Drawing from a panel on negotiating she moderated at the 2017 ASJA annual conference plus new material, ASJA member Michelle Rafter will share tips that freelancers can use to get the contracts and pay they deserve. Discover strategies guaranteed to make a positive difference in your writing business.
That's what we'll talk about in this month's "Shop Talk" event.

This has been the summer of nonfiction. I’ve read more nonfiction books than I have in a long while and I’ve had an influx of writers coming to me wanting support for their nonfiction works — about relationships, globalization and business, the internalization of negativity, women and power, and, of course, Trump.
I will never profess to anyone that writing a book is easy, but nonfiction writers do have a leg up over their novelist and memoirist peers in that nonfiction can and should be formulaic.

Ever wondered why some freelancers grow substantial incomes while some barely get by or fail altogether? A lot has been written on the subject, and most of it speaks about all that must be done to get new clients, there is less talk about the value of retaining existing clients and what can be done to keep them long-term.
As a successful freelancer and agency CEO, I know that customer retention is the key source of substantial income.

Before Hurricane Harvey dumped feet of water on Texas, a bevy of national reporters descended on the state to cover the devastating storm, which has since forced local Houston journalists to evacuate their studio and continues to pummel the region with record-breaking rains.
The devastating flood damage in Houston has drawn comparisons to Hurricane Katrina, which made landfall in 2005 and produced the highest storm surge ever seen on U.S. soil.

There are several people in my life recently who have taken the plunge into being a full-time freelancer. While they love experiencing more freedom, the reality that they are now responsible for everything is starting to set in.
