A special D.C.-edition of Client Connections on Nov. 8 will offer ASJA members the chance to pitch ideas to at least 16 editors — some of whom pay more than $1 a word. Read the full list of editors here. To participate, you must apply for a professional ASJA membership by Sept. 30 and, if accepted, pay your membership fee in full by Oct. 20.

The next Virtual Client Connections is just around the corner. At VCC you can meet editors and agents by phone or Skype. You’ll get to pitch story ideas one-on-one or talk about what a particular editor is looking for. Sign-ups for the next VCC will be Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. EST on ASJA's website on a first-come, first served basis. The VCC will run Oct. 22-25 and Oct. 29-Nov. 1. That is a lot of money, and small businesses are not left out of it. It is no longer a secret that there are hackers crawling the internet and they are a serious threat to your security online. These cybersecurity statistics are becoming scarier by the day. In fact, Gallup Poll revealed that more Americans are so afraid of hackers that they worry about them more than they do about terrorist attacks.

Technology companies could be doing more to help ensure the safety of journalists, who face online threats and harassment, according to a press freedom group.
Many journalists, especially female and gender non-conforming reporters, are familiar with receiving angry messages, threats and taunts online in response to their reporting. Online harassment is the biggest safety concern facing many female journalists, according to Courtney Radsch, advocacy director at the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The other day one of my Facebook friends who makes his living as a screenwriter-slash-writing professor posted some advice he’d received years ago from one of his own instructors: A crappy first draft is worth more than a nonexisting one. He followed the post with this endorsement: Words to live by.
As an author and writing teacher myself, I read this counsel and had two reactions. First, is nonexisting a word? (Isn’t the proper term nonexistent?) Second, here we go again with the trash talking.

A new Gallup survey on trust in the media shows Americans by a 2-to-1 margin don’t want journalists sharing their personal opinions about the news on social media.
But Americans overwhelmingly welcome journalists using social media to report facts.
“The one thing Americans do not want to see journalists doing on social media is sharing their personal views about the news of the day: 34 percent approve of this, while 65% disapprove, including 27% who strongly disapprove.
