ASJA
Censorship is a growing threat that infringes on our foundational rights. Last year saw an increase in censorship attempts and a revitalized effort to remove books from communal shelves to avoid controversy. The American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) tracked 354 challenges to library, school and university materials and services (including books, DVDs, magazines, programs, databases, games, exhibits, displays) in 2017. In the face of this rising tide, the Banned Books Week coalition, which includes ASJA, encourages readers to speak out against censorship. This year’s Banned Books Week, which runs Sept. 23-29, carries the theme, “Banning Books Silences Stories. Speak Out!”

ASJA
The ASJA Publications team is gearing up for 2019, and we'd like your ideas. As we've done in the past, each issue of the magazine will be centered around a theme. What themes would you like to see addressed or revisited? Would you like to see a current look at book publishing or marketing or social media? Are there specific stories you'd like to read or ASJA members/programs you want to know more about? Are you dying to see a particular market report? Email publications chair, Laura Laing with your suggestions. We are still a volunteer-written publication, so we also welcome offers to write stories for each issue. Thank you for helping make ASJA Magazine one of the top benefits for members.
The WRITER
Frankly, this article could have easily been titled “73 mistakes to avoid” or “103” or even “500,” because there are so many potential pitfalls new authors must navigate or avert when promoting their books. Even seasoned authors with several books on their resume can misstep when it comes to marketing a book today.
Having promoted authors since 1989, both as an in-house book publicist and now as the head of marketing for a public relations firm specializing in book publicity, I can assure you that all authors are vulnerable to making these mistakes, no matter their age, hometown or genre.

Writer's Digest
For some writers, structure appears like a bridge in the mist; for others, like myself, there’s only the mist. Several ingredients can be used to create a structure, like that bridge, that works for your book. You may know the answers to the considerations below right away, or you may need to experiment and discover them through the writing itself. Either way, memoir structure is as crucial as structure in fiction and no good memoir will be able to stand tall without it.

The claims are serious. Misappropriation under the Defend Trade Secrets Act and the Virginia Uniform Trade Secrets Act. Violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Stored Communications Act, and the Virginia Computer Crimes Act. Conversion and breach of fiduciary duty.
All because a sports reporter took his Twitter account with him when he left his newspaper.

Entrepreneur
Keren Lerner writes:
When starting my career as a designer, I never dreamed I would end up actually running my own business. Quite content in my full-time job at a web design company, I enjoyed the work, had a great relationship with my colleagues and felt fulfilled.
However, things soon took a downward dive — the company went public just before the dot-com bubble burst and the liquidators came in.
