ASJA
Professional membership in ASJA offers so much, and on November 8, professional members may participate in a special Client Connections at the conference in Washington, D.C. How does pitching to one (or more) of at least 16 editors sound—some of whom pay more than $1 per word? Read the full list of editors here. This is your chance, but to participate, you must apply for a professional ASJA membership by September 30 and, if accepted, pay your membership fee in full by Oct. 20. Learn more about becoming a Professional Member of ASJA!

It's that time again! We're ready for your session proposals for the 2020 NYC Conference, scheduled for April 19 and 20 at the New York Downtown Marriott in Lower Manhattan. We’re looking for sessions that will inspire, motivate and empower professional, independent non-fiction writers. For 2020, we are emphasizing connections to editors and advanced training through hands-on workshops/interactive presentations. Sessions will fall into one of four tracks: Journalism, Content Marketing, Books and Craft. Submit your proposal with your best ideas here. Submission deadline is Oct. 7. Notifications about session proposals will go out no later than Oct. 28.

Get ready to join ASJA's new **members-only Facebook group** to share tips and network! If you're an up-to-date ASJA member, you'll receive an invite to join the group.
Like The Forum, the Facebook group will be a place to ask questions about ASJA and freelance life. Since ASJA members already spend time on Facebook as a social platform, we are making it easier to connect with others where you already are. Similar to the Forum, the Facebook group will be a closed group, and users should follow the same Forum rules of respect and confidentiality.
We'll start the group with a welcome post from ASJA and then add several engaging questions during the week to kick it off! Look for those soon. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email ASJA member Carolyn Crist at crist.carolyn@gmail.com, who will moderate the group.

Freelancing and pitching go hand in hand. Even if you have a solid network and can get client referrals, it’s important to know how to pitch properly.
Pitching is a great skill to have because it ensures that you’ll always have work if you do it well. Even if you suddenly lose clients, you can start pitching to establish new client relationships and get your income back up.

Was it my imagination, or did my writing just get suckier while I went away on vacation? As a musician I am familiar with the infamous quote from the famous violinist Jascha Heifetz:
“If I don’t practice one day, I know it; two days, the critics know it; three days, the public knows it.”
That quote was always more like a slap across the face than the kick in the ass it was supposed to be. But what the heck? Writing is different. Words don’t intrinsically alter themselves or make a sound that could devolve in my absence.

Having worked as a full-time freelance writer for just shy of a decade, I often find friends reach out to ask me how I do it, hoping that they, too, can get published.
A part of me wants to take umbrage — after all, you wouldn’t presume that just anyone could become a plumber or reach out to a dentist friend and expect them to direct message you everything they know about root canals. At the same time, I know my editors are just as interested in your personal journeys, passions, and opinions as they are in mine.

Step aside, millennials — older Americans are carving out their own corner of the gig economy.
In a recent story for the New York Times, Charlotte Cowles reported that a growing cohort of baby boomers are picking up independent contract work, otherwise known as freelancing.
Despite being popularized, and often fetishized, by the millennial generation, freelancing is really just the 21st century approach to self-employment.
