ASJA
ASJA is announcing a new associate level of membership this fall, available to writers who don’t yet have the experience necessary to be a professional member of ASJA. Those who qualify for associate membership will be invited into special mentoring programs and will be able to participate in many of ASJA’s benefits.
ASJA focuses, not only on the craft of writing, but on helping people figure out a business model that works best for their writing businesses. “We believe that creating the associate level of membership will allow more writers to learn about the best business techniques practiced by our very successful professional members,” explains ASJA President Sherry Beck Paprocki. (ASJA members approved the associate membership when they voted on bylaws revisions last spring.)
Hours of volunteer work have gone into creating the associate member program. “We wanted to shape a program that would mentor associate members to help build their careers in today’s very complicated writing world,” says Paprocki. “The new associate level of membership in ASJA, including its entry requirements and benefits, has been carefully developed by ASJA’s Board of Directors, its Membership Growth and Retention Committee and its Associate Members subcommittee.”
For more information about applying for ASJA’s associate membership level, check out http://asja.org/Join-or-Renew/Who-Is-Eligible.

Why join ASJA? If you’re serious about freelance writing, it’s more of a question of “Why not?” Now an associate level of membership is available to those whose portfolio isn’t quite as extensive as the full membership requires. Yet many of the same benefits apply, including:
- Discounted member rate at the ASJA’S annual conference in May
- One-year subscription to the bi-monthly ASJA Magazine
- Access to the ASJA’S online forums
- Listening to (but not pitching at) Virtual Pitch Slams
- Access to ASJA Shop Talk audios
- Participation in ASJA’s Special Interest Groups
Associate members will also have access to a mentorship program, which will pair them with a more experienced, professional member.

We are actively recruiting volunteers for large and small roles in several key areas. Our immediate need is for members to work in various roles in our Peer-to-Peer Group. As you know, the program matches members with others who share their writing specialty or other interests.
If you're interested in finding out more about ASJA volunteer opportunities - for the Peer-to-Peer program, mentor opportunities, special events and other areas - please contact Volunteer Chair Nancy Dunham at NancyDunham@gmail.com.

The Writers Emergency Assistance Fund helps established freelance writers who, because of illness, disability, a natural disaster, or an extraordinary professional crisis are unable to work. If you are in need due to recent natural disasters that have occurred in the Houston area, in Florida or in other states, please check out the WEAF application requirements here.
For those who would like to assist writers in need at this time, we encourage you to make a tax-deductible contribution to WEAF here. (WEAF is managed by ASJA's Charitable Trust.)
A writer need not be a member of ASJA to qualify for a WEAF grant. However, applicants must establish a record of past professional freelance nonfiction writing over a sustained period of years, which means qualifications generally similar to those of ASJA members. WEAF does not award grants to beginning freelancers seeking funding for writing projects, nor does it fund works-in-progress of any kind.

Member name: Daryn Kagan
Success story: 1,000 word article on how to earn frequent flyer miles without flying for NextAvenue.org.
How I landed the gig: I participated in my first ASJA Virtual Pitch Slam with NextAvenue editor Richard Eisenberg. It actually sounded like he turned down my pitch on the call. I chalked it up to a good learning experience. Much to my delight, he reached out a couple weeks later saying they wanted to buy my piece.
Net result (money earned; placement, etc): $350. The article ran on the homepage of NextAvenue.org as "Editor's Pick." It has since been picked up and republished in full by Forbes.com and MarketWatch.com. Each of the posts included embedded links to my website, DarynKagan.com, which has brought record traffic days to my site.

Work-at-home freelancers tend to put in long hours. And those long hours are usually seated at a computer. When they do get out, it is to meet with a client — driving and sitting some more.
This can turn into an unhealthy lifestyle — little physical exercise, snacking or calling out for pizza delivery instead of fixing real meals, and, very often, not enough sleep. Then there is the isolation that is often a large part of a freelancer’s day, along with the stress of deadlines, internet issues and demands of family.

A restaurant I like in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, is the perfect setting for an intense conversation. The booths surrounding the bar are cavernous, and the pop mix that accompanies an avocado turkey burger prevents eavesdropping without requiring a speaker to shout. The noirish darkness gives discussions extra weight. It was there, on a Wednesday night last October, that my wife told me the truth.

A just-released study offers striking confirmation that for many journalists, data-based reporting has become more ingrained in the newsroom.
The study, one of the first comprehensive studies of the field undertaken by Google News Lab and PolicyViz, showed that 42 percent of respondents said they use data regularly to tell stories, and 51 percent of news organizations have a dedicated data journalist on staff.

Months before my book, "Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean," came out, I teamed with several publicists to build a 12-month, 100-event tour. Yes – 100! We targeted the coastal regions of North America, including Canada and Alaska. We booked events at universities, bookstores, grammar schools, breweries, museums, aquariums, libraries, Audubon Societies, surf shops, outdoor stores (L.L.Bean, REI), land trusts, literary conferences and festivals, science centers and specialty clubs (yacht clubs, book clubs and the Explorers Club).
