ASJA is leading the battle to protect California freelance journalists from the threat of dramatic new restrictions on our right to work as independent contractors. We managed to stop the worst parts of a newly approved law. But freelance careers are still endangered, and you may be affected soon by similar restrictions even if you don't live in the Golden State. Our fight continues.

ASJA's Peer-to-Peer program acts like a matchmaking service, pairing up professional members who have similar interests and goals so they can help each other grow in their careers. The peer relationship can consist of two colleagues interacting on an even playing field, or it can be more of a mentor/mentee relationship.
Are you willing to help out an up-and-coming writer by becoming a mentor? Or do you just need help finding your perfect professional match? Right now we have a travel journalist seeking a peer to swap stories with, a technology writer who would like to find another tech-head and someone looking for help honing pitches. If you would like to be paired with one of these people, or would like to enter your own request for a peer, contact Sophia Bennett, Peer-to-Peer program coordinator, at sophiamcbennett@gmail.com.

If you've ever been helped in your professional life, now is your chance to pay it forward. Each month, ASJA welcomes new associates who want to fine-tune their skills, learn from more experienced writers and prepare to apply to become a professional member of ASJA. You can help them.
We've created two guidebooks for an eight-week commitment — one tailored to mentors and one to associates — to help you organize your discussions and keep your time commitment to a reasonable level. Interested? Intrigued? Ready to dive in? Visit the ASJA website to register or contact Lori Ferguson, committee chair, at (603) 566-6368.

ASJA
Kicking off in October, the fall membership drive is one of our biggest recruitment pushes of the year. We’re doing something a little bit different this year by launching a Q&A series with ASJA members. We’re currently seeking professional and associate members who do journalism, content marketing, book writing, ghostwriting and more to interview for our Q&A series (tentatively titled, “How I Became a Freelance Writer”). We’ll promote the series on social media to attract prospective members to a new dedicated landing page for the fall membership drive where they can learn more about the benefits of ASJA membership and apply to join the organization.
If you’re interested in participating, please email recruiting chair Satta Sarmah Hightower at satta@sattasarmah.com and we'll send you a link to a quick Google form where you can fill in your responses. By highlighting your success and the diverse work of our membership, we hope to recruit several new members this fall and grow the ASJA community.

Tax time for my old freelance clients was terrifying. Many had no idea if they made a profit, and they certainly didn’t have anything set aside to pay their taxes.
These days, I’m working full-time as a freelance writer, so I’ve been on both sides of this issue. I’ve pulled together tax returns from shoeboxes of receipts, combined with handwritten lists of income and expenses plus maybe some bank and credit card statements thrown in for good measure. I’ve been the one delivering the bad news that they have a big tax bill.

Are you interested in starting a freelance career? Freelancing has been on the rise in recent years and it’s only going to keep growing. In fact, according to Nasdaq, 43% of the U.S. workforce will be freelancers by 2020.
But, with so much competition, it can be difficult to land your first paying clients, especially if you don’t have much experience. Don’t worry though. If you dream of working-from-home and running your own business, you can break through the crowded freelance market and stand out from the rest.

As a new freelancer, you might feel clueless when it comes to setting your rates. You don’t want to overcharge and get no offers, but you also don't want to undercharge and have clients take advantage of you.
This decision can be one of the most stress-inducing parts of starting your business, and it’s not to be taken lightly. You’ll want to set realistic rates while staying true to your worth as a service provider.

Writing headlines for articles is probably the hardest, and yet most important, parts of any journalist’s job. However, it is a skill that takes time to perfect.
Hannah Rock, chief night editor at The Times, is the final checkpoint for the stories which make the morning splash. She makes sure the headlines stand up, make sense and encourage the reader to dive into the story.

I’ve never met an editor who was as eager as Jennifer was to show me one of her organization’s worst stories.
Jennifer (not her real name) was the senior editor of VidNews, my pseudonym for a news organization that, at the time of my visit in 2015, was largely producing short, aggregated videos on daily news events using brief third-party video clips, motion graphics, and original narration.
