Sometimes, it’s about relationships. Actually, it’s always about relationships, and sometimes, they take a while to grow. Recently I received what has got to be my fifteenth (or is it twentieth?) rejection from a very nice editor I met at ASJA’s New York conference in 2016. I met her at the Client Connections conference, and I have been pitching her with ideas…that have come SO close, but I haven’t nabbed an assignment yet.
But, we do have a connection, and I figure, the odds are in my favor – if I keep sending out solid pitches, eventually, one will be a homerun. In the meantime, we still maintain a connection, and I remain positive.
Three years ago, I attended the Content Connections conference in Chicago. If you read my story about my experience there, you might remember, my income was at one of its lowest points ever in my entire freelancing career. It was financially challenging to afford the conference, but I figured, it would be more financially challenging NOT to attend the conference.
I’m so glad I went. Just yesterday, I had an editor I met through the conference ask me if I would like to take on a very large project before the end of the year. This particular project will pay me more money than I earned from five different books I’ve written, and it will be vastly easier than writing a book!
I’m so excited to attend this year’s conference on Nov. 18 in Chicago. I know I’ll meet more editors, and hopefully, together we can build sustaining connections that will further both my success and their success.

Your chance to pitch Boston Globe Magazine’s Michael Fitzgerald
Virtual Pitch Slams (VPS) are one-hour interactive phone conference calls during which a moderator hosts a client, who outlines what his/her outlet is looking for from freelance writers. Then, ASJA members give live pitches by telephone, followed by constructive feedback on each story idea.
ASJA members can sign up on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Tuesday, Nov. 28 at noon Eastern to get one of the pitching slots. We will provide instructions on how to sign up soon. Members may also register just to listen in on the event, as they would for a Shop Talk. VPS will also be recorded and accessible via ASJA’s website shortly after the event.

Humorist-in-Residence
What writer wouldn’t want to spend two all-expenses-paid, blissful weeks at a hotel in Dayton, Ohio? Yes, a hotel. Room service. An omelet bar. The sun rising over the Great Miami River. It’s the ultimate gift for any writer — the luxury of time to write…and on the “Dayton Riviera,” no less. That’s the premise behind “A Hotel Room of One’s Own: The Erma Bombeck | Anna Lefler Humorist-in-Residence Program.” It's a great opportunity for writers with a comedic flair. Application deadline: Oct. 6 (midnight, Eastern).

In the communication industries of today, change is the new normal. This survey is designed to examine the roles and status of communication professionals, including the types of positions they hold, the role mentoring has played in their careers and their access to management opportunities in all of the major communication industries.
This study and second national survey about the role and status of women in the communication industries, is being conducted by the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in the College of Communication, Architecture & the Arts at Florida International University.
The survey is being distributed to leading professional associations in newspaper, magazine, online and broadcast journalism; advertising, and public relations. The survey was first administered in 2015 - the first time in at least a decade that all of these industries were being surveyed at the same time. This survey replicates the first survey.
The Kopenhaver Center will release the results of this study in early 2018 and publish them as well on its Kopenhaver Center website. Results also will be sent to the corresponding professional organizations that participated in this study.
Your participation is voluntary, and your responses are anonymous. The survey should take you no more than 20 minutes to complete.
If you have any questions about this survey, please contact Lillian A. Abreu at the Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication, at labreu@fiu.edu or 305-919-4065

Writer's Digest
Writers must write every day. That’s the mantra. Authors ranging from Ray Bradbury to Ernest Hemingway to Doris Lessing all propound the necessity of writing daily. But the thing is, writers are also humans, and many humans have an irksome desire to procreate. And those tiny humans that arrive into the writer’s well-constructed, disciplined, every day writing routine are selfishly indifferent to this mantra. Indeed, they sometimes seem to be doing everything they can to sabotage your great writing effort.

The WRITER
Revision is best done in steps: Multiple holistic read-throughs are important, but separate searches for particular weaknesses are also valuable.
Let me try that again: Revision works best in stages. Naturally, we need to read through our work holistically several times. Too often, though, we overlook targeted searches for particular weaknesses. Better? I did make other language changes, but the metamorphosis happened in the course of eliminating lifeless be verbs.

Pay for advertising. Pass out flyers. Start a blog. Freelancers must read the same tired, business growth advice over and over again. If these things work, that’s great. But, what if they don’t? The only logical next step is to think outside the box.
Sometimes it takes the unusual and creative to get results. If you need to create growth really fast, try these four strategies.
