Few people care to tackle it head-on, and no one wants to admit it, but I’m going to talk about the one subject we writers fear the most: plagiarism. Several weeks ago, I was accused of inadvertent plagiarism, after 38 years of being called nothing but highly original (among other things). I was terribly upset and determined to get to the root of the problem. People may not have always liked or agreed with my writing but no one has ever charged me with copying anything.

Your chance to pitch Boston Globe Magazine’s Michael Fitzgerald
Virtual Pitch Slams (VPS) are one-hour interactive phone conference calls during which a moderator hosts a client, who outlines what his/her outlet is looking for from freelance writers. Then, ASJA members give live pitches by telephone, followed by constructive feedback on each story idea.
ASJA members can sign up on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Tuesday, Nov. 28 at noon Eastern to get one of the pitching slots. We will provide instructions on how to sign up soon. Members may also register just to listen in on the event, as they would for a Shop Talk. VPS will also be recorded and accessible via ASJA’s website shortly after the event.
Be sure to read the FAQs here for more information.

Member name: Jen Reeder
Success story: Family Circle assignment for the “Pets” section
How I landed the gig: 2016 Client Connections meeting
Net result (money earned; placement, etc): $2/word assignment that has helped open doors for assignments about pets with other general interest publications. For instance, last week I wrote a cover story for Today.com.
Comment about ASJA: I love the chance to connect with editors as well as writers through ASJA. The conference is terrific, of course. I’m also a big fan of the Special Interest Groups — Lynn Freehill-Maye led a fantastic pitching SIG, and Michele Hollow facilitated a fun one for animal writers. When SIG wrangler (and phenomenal writer) Kate Silver was a door bouncer at Client Connections in 2016, I noticed her name tag and introduced myself. Since then, she’s sent me leads, story ideas, advice and even interviewed me about travel with dogs for The Washington Post. Everyone I’ve met has been so gracious and supportive. Cheers!

The phone rings.
It’s a number you don’t know, and against your best judgment, you pick it up. It’s them. You know who; that very important person who can make or break your career. The one you’ve been waiting for. Your heart races. Then, the inevitable moment.
“You’re not good enough,” they say. “I can’t believe you made it this far without anyone finding you out for the fraud that you are.”

The University of Colorado Boulder is creating a master of arts in journalism practice that’s designed to give journalists practical advice for succeeding as a one-person business.
Trust me on this: It’s needed.

It doesn't matter if you're the most successful freelancer in the world, you'll still get "the fear." You know what I'm talking about. That dreaded feeling that work might dry up. Those anxious thoughts that you've finally reached your peak and everything is going downhill from here.
Quite naturally, you've got the "small business mentality." You'll take on anything and everything to ensure the money keeps rolling in. But you're knackered.

I found myself slipping away.
I was in a relationship with a woman struggling with bipolar depression, and she was adamant that no one should know what was going on. I was keeping everything locked inside myself, until I realized that my fiancée’s illness had become my illness. Bottling everything up was taking a physical and mental toll on me. I needed an outlet desperately. I was on the brink of a physical and nervous breakdown when something pulled me back from the ledge: writing.
