ASJA’s Writers Conference in Washington, DC, scheduled for Nov. 8 at Trinity Washington University, will include a special DC-edition of Client Connections, giving ASJA professional members who register the chance to pitch several of the 19 editors — some of whom pay more than $1 a word. Meet with editors from national outlets such as Smithsonian, Mother Jones, OZY Media, The Highlight by Vox and Washington Post BrandStudio, and editors from association publications including Civil Engineering Magazine, National Wildlife Federation and ChemMatters. A wide variety of editors from associations, nonprofits, online publications and consumer publications will be meeting with writers. Click here to read the full list of editors.
Professional members will select their preferred meetings via an online lottery signup between Oct. 21-25. In-person meetings will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at ASJA’s Writers Conference in Washington, D.C.

My freelance writing career was somewhat of an accident. When my first son was born in 2014, I decided (at the last minute) that daycare costs weren't worth the stress of a longer commute, and I quit my job. Thankfully, after downsizing homes, my husband's salary was enough to keep us afloat.
But if I wanted spending money, I had to come up with it on my own — so I started putting my pricey English degree to work by writing and editing for friends. Five years later, I'm earning a full salary.

If you hadn't noticed, freelancers are slowly taking over economies around the world. In the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics last pegged the number of self-employed and freelance workers at 15 million - which represents one in every ten American workers. And that figure was based on data from 2015, before many of today's gig economy startups had gotten up to speed.
