Tara Richter, president of Richter Publishing, is one presenter for our Chicago conference’s “Spotlight on Ghostwriting.” Her journey from obscurity to top-selling author to publishing mogul has certainly been unique. Along with being featured on CNN, ABC, Daytime TV, FOX, SSN, Channel 10 News, USA TODAY, and more for her Dating Jungle books, her company has published books from clients all over the world, most notably How to Catch a Shark from entrepreneurs Anthony Amos and Kevin Harrington. In January 2014, she started Richter Publishing in Tampa, through which she hires freelance ghostwriters to write books for clients.

Your chance to pitch Boston Globe Magazine’s Michael Fitzgerald
Virtual Pitch Slams (VPS) are one-hour interactive phone conference calls during which a moderator hosts a client, who outlines what his/her outlet is looking for from freelance writers. Then, ASJA members give live pitches by telephone, followed by constructive feedback on each story idea.
ASJA members can sign up on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Tuesday, Nov. 28 at noon Eastern to get one of the pitching slots. We will provide instructions on how to sign up soon. Members may also register just to listen in on the event, as they would for a Shop Talk. VPS will also be recorded and accessible via ASJA’s website shortly after the event.
Be sure to read the FAQs here for more information.

Member name: Kristin Baird Rattini, Foristell, MO
Success stories: Breaking into Costco Connection Magazine, Discover Magazine and Planning Magazine
How I landed the gig: The first two through Virtual Pitch Slams and the third by volunteering as a host for Virtual Client Connections.
Net result (money earned; placement, etc): $2,710
Comment: I can’t say enough about the editor networking opportunities that ASJA provides. In particular, the Virtual Pitch Slam with Costco Connection helped me break through on an account I’d queried for a couple of years. I'm now working on my second Member Connections story. I’m optimistic that the positive feedback I received during the Food Pitch Slam and Client Connections at the ASJA Conference will lead to even more work!

If you're interested in finding out more about ASJA volunteer opportunities - for the Peer-to-Peer program, mentor opportunities, special events and other areas - please contact Volunteer Chair Nancy Dunham at NancyDunham@gmail.com.

Before I even sit down to begin my work, I struggle with choosing the right music for working. Sometimes I feel I concentrate better in silence, and other times I need a mood booster to help motivate me to get started or an inspirational track to get me to think differently about something I’m stuck on.
