Please note, the revised link.
ASJA’s Writers Conference in Washington, DC, scheduled for Nov. 8, at Trinity Washington University, will include a special DC-edition of Client Connections, giving ASJA professional members the chance to pitch several of the 19 editors — some of whom pay more than $1 a word. Meet with editors from national outlets such as Mother Jones, OZY Media, The Highlight by Vox and Washington Post BrandStudio, and editors from association publications including Civil Engineering Magazine, National Wildlife Federation and ChemMatters. A wide variety of editors from associations, nonprofits, online publications and consumer publications will be meeting with writers. You can find the full list of editors here.
Professional members will select their preferred meetings via an online lottery between Oct. 21-25. In-person meetings will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at ASJA’s Writers Conference in Washington, D.C.

California-based freelance writer Arianna Jeret recently learned about Assembly Bill 5 and is now concerned she and her colleagues in California may soon be speaking about their jobs in the past tense.
Jeret, who contributes to relationship websites YourTango.com and The Good Men Project, says freelance writing has helped support her two children and handle their different school schedules. Her current gigs — covering mental health, lifestyle and entertainment — allow her to work from home, from the office and even from her children's various appointments.

The Writer
Fourteen people sit around a table. The room is spare, decorated with only a few New Yorker posters and a splash of yellow paint. Every so often, an ambulance screams by. We’re just a few blocks from Times Square. The mood is intense, thoughtful, and occasionally very loud. The number of books self-published in the U.S. saw more rapid growth in 2018, jumping 40% over 2017, according to Bowker’s annual survey of the self-publishing market. In its report, “Self-Publishing in the United States, 2013-2018: Print and E-books,” the total number of print and e-books that were self-published in 2018 was 1.68 million, up from 1.19 million in 2017. Bowker measures the size of the market based on the number ISBN’s registered and thus does not include self-published e-books by Amazon’s Kindle division, which uses an Amazon identifier.

For the past few years, our news has become similar to junk food — too much, too rich, too fast and mostly not good for you.
