When I was a kid, I absolutely loved to read. It was such a treat when my elementary school librarian let me check out more than the two-book limit. I could bring home every “Little House” book in the Laura Ingalls Wilder series!
As a child and later, as a college student, it didn’t occur to me that the books I was reading were 99 percent written by and about white people. It was like looking through the window at other people’s lives — entertaining certainly, but not something I identified with.

Many writers have heard about how lucrative ghostwriting can be. The opportunity to earn tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars from a single book project is quite appealing. And demand for ghostwriting skills is on the rise, as experts, executives, consultants, professional speakers, and others realize that partnering with a professional writer is an effective and efficient way to produce content. In addition to books, there are ghostwriting opportunities for bylined articles, blog posts, whitepapers, and columns, too. But how do you break into this potentially lucrative field? How do you get that first assignment? ASJA member Marcia Layton Turner, founder of the Association of Ghostwriters, will explain how.
That’s what we’ll talk about in this month’s “Shop Talk” event.

Success stories: Developing a specialty in writing about cancer and oncology
How I landed the gig: Client Connections
Net result (money earned; placement, etc): More than $10,000 in the last three years
Comment: I’ve written about health and wellness for consumer magazines, and I have a background in public health communications. I landed Client Connections appointments with editors of two different magazines for people with cancer and have since done work for both. There’s nothing like the chance to meet with editors face to face to help build strong relationships. The relationships I’ve made through ASJA — both with clients and with my colleagues — are instrumental to the work I’ve been able to do.

The holiday season is pretty much here already, and the internet is still probably the outlet of choice for much of your marketing. But, don't count out traditional marketing just yet. Just as in-person interactions can personalize your relationship with customers and colleagues, print collateral can make a different type of impression on customers.
For freelancers, the holiday season is the perfect opportunity to network locally to spread the word about your offerings.

The WRITER
Tweaking pitches to editors grows exhausting, so someone offering work feels like a gift. That is the appeal of online ads calling for writers. So is their availability: A freelancer can fill an entire day’s work just applying for gigs on sites of varying reputes.
Think of online ads as walking through a city at 2 a.m. Some neighborhoods radiate youthful fun; others have a winding-down, sip a scotch-and-soda at the bar vibe. Too many teem with sketchy characters that have you patting your pockets for your phone and wallet.

The Content Standard by Skyword
Writing this introduction right now earns me three points.
At the beginning of this week, I decided to gamify my freelance writing work. As a serial procrastinator, I’m willing to attempt any new system and see how it works for me. So, when I heard that A.J. O’Connell, a writing colleague, had created a game out of her writing tasks to motivate her through self-employment, I wondered if it may work for me, too.

As a freelancer, you’re bound to have the envy of your friends and family, but a lot of the time there doesn’t seem to be much "free" in freelancer. Most of your time is taken up by work and the remaining moments by tasks that people think you can handle because you work from home.
Being a freelancer is arguably much more difficult than being an employee. You’re likely to work on an hourly or per project basis rather than a salary, and that means that you’re always working flat out. If you don’t, you’re losing money.
