The Fight Comes to Us

I'm not the sort of person who goes looking for a fight. That goes double for a legal fight. Though I'll admit to a fondness for TV shows about lawyers, when it comes to real life I agree with the dictum that in a court battle, the only winners are the lawyers. I've wimped out several times over the years rather than take someone to court.
But some things demand a response. Among them is Google scanning more than 30 million books — and counting — and exposing nearly the entire texts on Google Book Search without asking the authors’ or publishers' permission. In 2004, the Authors Guild, along with a consortium of publishers, sued Google because of it.

I know the day will come when my 1999 flip phone finally dies of cardiac arrest, but until that time, I'm going to plod along with my puny screen, my cheapo GoPhone minutes and simply watch my peers salivate over their crack addition to technology.
Why do I resist this? It's simple. I don't want my brain to whittle away with all the bells and whistles that come with so much technology. As a freelance writer and photographer, I think it's the right move.
