Let's Get Virtual
ASJA
ASJA president Laura Laing says: All signs point to another pandemic peak — a second or a third, depending on how you’re counting. That’s terrible news, of course, and it signals that this “new normal” that the scientists were touting nine months ago is a reality. This week, I purchased a standing desk and a walking treadmill, because I won’t be getting back to normal exercise for a while. I’m about to cut out and sew another collection of cloth masks. And, following a successful 2020 virtual conference and in the best interests of everyone’s good health, ASJA just announced that our 2021 annual conference will be virtual.

ASJA 2021 Conference Officially Goes Virtual — Propose Sessions!
ASJA
The ASJA Board of Directors last week announced the decision to make the 2021 ASJA Conference a virtual event. The committee credited the success of the 2020 Virtual Conference with helping them to make the decision to move next year’s conference online. “Thanks in part to the overwhelming response to the ASJA 2020 virtual conference, leadership was able to make the decision now instead of continuing to monitor the situation,” the announcement read.
As planning is in the early stages, the deadline to propose sessions has been extended until Nov. 1. Please use this form to suggest ideas. The committee is especially looking for interactive approaches and diverse voices.
Please contact ASJA 2021 co-chair Kristine Hansen at kristinehansenwriter@gmail.com with questions or concerns, or to volunteer. If you deferred your 2020 registration to 2021, you will be contacted in the next few weeks.

How Simple Storytelling Techniques Can Make You a Better Writer
Journalism.co.uk
I do not have many skills in life. Do not ask me to fix your car, or put up a shelf. But there is one thing I do know: how to tell a story.
I started out as a feature writer, working first in magazines then newspapers and now, primarily, online but, while the platform has evolved, one thing has never changed: people love to read about people.

Americans Blame Unfair News Coverage on Media Outlets, Not the Journalists Who Work for Them
Pew Research Center
The November general election is rapidly approaching, with debates raging over how fairly news outlets are covering the candidates and important issues. Survey data from earlier this year shows that most Americans think news coverage in their country is one-sided, but they fault media organizations themselves much more than the journalists who work for them.

What Is a Freelance Agency, and How Can I Build One?
Entrepreneur
Building a freelance agency might appeal to you if you are making the decision between a business that relies on you as the primary person to complete the work and one that instead relies on a team of subcontractors to help you deliver client projects.
Freelancers have to make an important decision on how they will run their business from the time they set it up.

The Coronavirus Has Closed More Than 60 Local Newsrooms Across America. And Counting.
Poynter
In many places, it started with a cut in print days. Furloughs. Layoffs. Just to get through the crisis, newsroom leaders told readers.
In some places, none of it was enough.
Now, small newsrooms around the country, often more than 100 years old, often the only news source in those places, are closing under the weight of the coronavirus. Some report they’re merging with nearby publications.
