ASJA past president Randy Dotinga has been a leading voice in the debate over California Assembly Bill 5, which would impact freelance journalism in that state by limiting how independent writers and photographers can work. The bill was passed, signed by the governor and is set to become law on Jan. 1, 2020.
ASJA lobbied hard to advocate for the rights of freelance journalists and won a small victory in language added to the bill that will allow a limited form of freelance journalism to continue in California. Unfortunately, restrictions in the bill will still severely limit how freelancers do their work. The full Weekly article may be read here.
Recently, the NY Post printed an article that quotes Dotinga. Read that article here.
Additionally, an LA Times article about the subject may be read here.
Dotinga also wrote in the upcoming issue of the ASJA Magazine:
ASJA is lobbying for protections, and we’re considering whether to sue the state of California. The law treats types of freelance speech in different ways — press releases have no limits while journalistic writing does — and that violates the First Amendment.
Meanwhile, ASJA and our allies are taking part in talks about pending AB5-style legislation in New York state. We want to make sure that what happens in California stays in California!
The good news: Freelance journalists now have critical mass thanks to thousands of our colleagues and allies who are speaking up to legislators and AB5-friendly Democratic presidential candidates.

Surveys and polls are sometimes useful and often suspect: useful because they can show how a designated segment of society feels about a topic or can provide information about those individuals’ lives; suspect because there is no guarantee that the individuals responding to the questions are truly representative of the target group. Also, much depends on how the questions in a survey are worded. With those caveats, two recent surveys are worth reading.

Some people view self-publishing as a failure, chosen only when no other options remain. But the simple truth is that traditional gatekeepers — literary agents and editors at publishing houses — simply don’t have the bandwidth to determine the value of every story. Hundreds of thousands of books are self-published every year, and there’s no way to keep up with them all. Unless you already have a built-in audience or previous experience in publishing, it can be difficult to get your work in front of decision-makers.

I didn’t set out to write a collection of stories about grief and loss; I think to do so would have been almost overwhelming. Instead, "American Grief in Four Stages," grew a story at a time.
I wrote one story about a teen narrator whose sister has been murdered and who needed an extreme voice to counter her extreme feelings. But after that story was done, I felt like it was only the beginning of thinking about grief for me, its place in our culture, and my own complicated experiences.

Freelancing makes up a primary sector of the commercial industry today. As more traditional employees realize the potential of a work-life balance quite unlike anything the average office can offer, they are striking out on their own. Working independently presents freelancers with the chance for new opportunities and challenges. With the influx of new workers into the growing industry, there is naturally a lot of competition.
