ASJA
In the fall of 2017, I was thrilled to be hired for a freelance writing opportunity that suited me perfectly. As a longtime practicing attorney and freelance writer, I relish writing posts where I can marry my passions of law and writing. Not only did this job allow me to pen law-related web content for law firms who were clients of the company, but I also wrote in-depth articles for the company’s weekly e-newsletter.
Not long into my tenure, I started noticing typographical and grammatical errors had been edited into my articles prior to publication. For example, misplaced commas were inserted in my copy, transforming an otherwise well-structured sentence into a stilted, sometimes convoluted mess.

Do you have experience or expertise that you'd like to share? A bit of time in your calendar to spare? Why not become an Associate Member Mentor?
The ASJA Associate Member Mentoring Program offers new Associate members the chance to fine tune their skills, benefit from the skill and experience of veteran writers, and prepare for application as a professional member of ASJA. To participate, both Mentor and Associate are asked to agree to the following:
- A two-month commitment to the program.
- A dedicated time commitment to the Mentor-Associate relationship; the length and timing of these intervals may be decided by each individual team.
- Regular communications (weekly suggested), which may take place via phone, email, text, Facebook, etc. — whatever is deemed most convenient for both parties.
- Focused work toward the goal of increasing Associates’ experience and expertise and preparing them to apply for professional membership in ASJA.
- Interactions that are informed by the Associate Member Mentoring Program Mentor Guide provided by ASJA.
Every effort is made to match Mentors and Associates based on skills, experience and expressed goals. Intrigued? Want to know more? Ready to sign on? Send an email to the ASJA Mentor coordinator, Lori Ferguson at lori@writerloriferguson.com or give her a call (603) 566-6368.

Thomas Jefferson imagined a nation of independent, self-reliant Americans who plowed their own fields and created their own destinies. And for a long time, that’s exactly what they did.
In 1860, as much as 80 percent of the workforce was self-employed, according to historian Steven Gillon. From then on, things started changing, and quite dramatically. By 1900, the number of self-employed had fallen to 50 percent; by 1977, it fell to 7 percent.

Recently, the Committee to Protect Journalists released its annual Global Impunity Index, ranking the countries where the murder of journalists goes unsolved. The report comes as the push continues for answers in the disappearance and presumed death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and days after CNN received a pipe bomb in the mail.
For its report, CPJ examined the murder of journalists between Sept. 1, 2008, and Aug. 31, 2018.

While the term "gig economy" feels like just another buzzword, the reality is that our global workforce is moving in this direction.
In May 2017, the BLS released a report saying that, within the month of May, 10.6 million people engaged in independent contractor work. Upwork's 2017 Freelancing in America report found that, in total, 57.3 million people in the U.S. were freelancing last year. I've been freelancing and working in the gig economy since 2011, when I got my first freelance writing job.

When I began freelancing, an editor from a local news site approached me with an assignment. The pay seemed too low for the time commitment, so I declined. Not long afterward, a fellow freelancer mentioned that he’d been approached with the same assignment for higher pay. I don’t know why this pay disparity happened — whether the editor got clearance to offer a higher fee after I declined, or whether something more insidious such as sexism was at play. But I know this: If the outlet approaches me again, there’s room to push for more money. I owe that knowledge to another freelancer.
