I don’t know about you, but in my family, early-mid November is the time of exchanging lengthy emails about Thanksgiving menus, often in a fashion that requires quite a few diplomatic skills. So fun (fun?) idea: Let’s do a recipe exchange. I think a Facebook thread is easiest – I know some of you don’t favor it, but I’m trying to make things as simple as possible on the greatest number of people. We’ll see how it goes, eh? So, are you a same menu every year kind of family, do you vary it up, or is there a mix of both? And who remembers that infamous Thanksgiving sides map from a few years ago – were you in agreement? Offended? What’s the Thanksgiving dish you would most want to investigate the history of? All the best, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly Editor

Paycheck — Yelp for Professional Freelance Writers — Is Back!
ASJA
Do you want to tell other members what it’s like to work with a particular client or publisher? Are you looking for feedback on what an outlet pays or whether they pay on time? We’re proud to announce that ASJA’s Paycheck Database is back! This program is a bit like Yelp for freelance writers. You can submit your personal reviews here, and read others’ reviews here. The more submissions we have, the better the resource! Your name will never be published with your review (and you don’t even have to list your name). We do require the name of the outlet/publication/company. This is a member-only benefit, so you must be logged in to the website to submit a review or read reviews.

ASJA members can share their writing news using a nifty form at https://www.asja.org/submit-member-news/. (You must be logged in to see this member-only page.) After approval, your submission will appear on the Member News page. The submission also goes to Holly, our esteemed Weekly newsletter editor, who will add it here. And Stephanie, our ASJA Magazine editor, will pull relevant news from the Member News page on the website to include in the print publication. What’s stopping you? Add your news about new book publications, especially important articles, and awards! Please allow 3-5 days for your submission to appear on the website.

The application for assistance is here. And if you’re having a good year or simply counting your blessings as you watch the coverage of the hurricane damage, please consider a donation to WEAF. Each year, ASJA grants thousands of dollars to professional writers in need. Our ability to continue this program depends on donations.

Make Your US DOL Comment on IC Rule
ASJA
The Department of Labor’s proposed rule to redefine who is an independent contractor is open for comments through December 13. Please consider submitting a comment. Fight for Freelancers prepared a template for those interested, basically where you share your story and ask for the current rule to remain in place. ASJA member Debbie Blumberg submitted a terrific comment. To learn more about the issue, listen to ASJA member Kim Kavin on a podcast explaining the proposed rule and the background. It’s well worth the listen.

journalism.co.uk
Witnessing a murder of a colleague is one of the hardest events a journalist could possibly deal with.
Shock, sadness, anger and "what-ifs" follow. What if it was me that day? What if I have moved differently? What if it will be me next time?
Leona O'Neill, journalism lecturer at Ulster University in Northern Ireland, has a first-hand experience of this trauma.

The philosophy of modern newsrooms
Columbia Journalism Review
We don’t have one fixed, underlying, philosophy of journalism to which every newsroom subscribes. In reality, we probably don’t have a single newsroom in which every editorial staffer feels the same way.
