Help Promote ASJA through Your Local Press Club

ASJA
This fraught time for journalists presents a valuable opportunity for professional groups to join forces. Please consider reaching out to your city or regional press club to ask them to run a blurb promoting ASJA in their e-newsletter or other communications. During our Fall Membership Drive, we offer a $50 discount to new members who sign up before Dec. 9.
The Atlanta Press Club is generously supporting us in this way and other press clubs may also be open to informing freelancers of the benefits we offer. Below is the first line of the blurb — I can email you the full, brief text if you are interested in contacting your local press organization. Contact me, Parul Hinzen, at parulka@comcast.net.

The Big YES about flights to Havana —
YES, U.S. airlines still fly to Havana despite Trump’s new ban on air travel. The ban does not affect the ASJA tour March 21-28, 2020.
YES, American, United, Delta, Jet Blue and Southwest fly non-stop and/or direct flights to Havana.
YES, prices are within reason and you may find a deal. As of this writing, American lists a round trip ticket from Chicago for $352. Southwest will take you from Atlanta for $262, although it may be the sunrise express.

Cost of the trip is $3885/$4285 per person for double/single occupancy. For the itinerary, other information and to register, visit the ASJA site or contact Charles Bittner at charlesbittner@verizon.net or 617-833-1435.

Writer's Digest
The completed first draft of "The Distance Between," which is, among other things, an addiction memoir, clocked in at 120,000 words, which meant it was somewhere north of four hundred pages in a Microsoft Word document. At first, I was proud of the accomplishment. (Look at all the words I wrote!) But then I realized that the words were just that: words. And not all of them were good words. And not all of them belonged in the book. (Who put all these extra words here?!)

Forbes
Journaling is a useful practice for writers, artists, musicians and anyone engaged in creative work. It encourages capturing ideas and self-reflection, both key skills for creatives. It's also a useful skill for entrepreneurs and busy executives, as it fosters clear thinking.
For example, an entrepreneur running a new business probably has dozens of goals they'd like their business to achieve this quarter, never mind this year.

You’re busy, you’re stressed and you have demanding and difficult clients. Still, you keep putting in many hours to meet deadlines, market to potential clients, respond to calls, emails, etc. No one really understands the life of a freelancer unless they live it. But you do live it. And it is easy to forget about your own needs while meeting those of your business. The end result will be burnout and lack of productivity.

The Writer
When I started doing the ‘I don’t get out of bed for less than $4 a word’ thing, people started paying me $4 a word.”
This is all Taffy Brodesser-Akner, the New York Times Magazine staff writer and freshly minted best-selling novelist, told Cosmopolitan’s Jen Ortiz. In mid-June, when the comments hit the social media terrain, it didn’t take long for writers to bitch before realizing Brodesser-Akner is an aspirational figure, not a nemesis.
