ASJA
Access, whether to someone or to something, is a valuable commodity these days. For sports fans, it might be a sideline pass for the Super Bowl, a box seat on the finish line at the Kentucky Derby or an invitation to step inside the ropes at the Ryder Cup. For writers, access is more personal and often means the opportunity to pitch an article or a book proposal to a well-known editor or literary agent. Meaningful access does not always include a chance to pitch, though. Sometimes access means the opportunity to listen and learn.
Consider, for example, ASJA Direct: Inside Intel on Getting Published and Paid Well, a podcast series conceived earlier this year by Estelle Erasmus and available to ASJA members as a no-cost benefit of their membership.

The ASJA Anniversary Campaign was created to celebrate ASJA's 70th anniversary this year. An anonymous donor and long-time ASJA member will contribute up to $10,000 in matching funds for all donations that come in before Dec. 31.
The Anniversary Campaign's goal is to raise $150,000 over the next year so that ASJA's website can be reinvented as an educational portal for current and prospective members — especially emerging voices from diverse communities. This matching donation will help ASJA reach its goal faster.
Contribute today, and help ASJA realize this goal to make ASJA the leading educational resource for freelancers. With the matching donor's contribution, you can double your donation by giving today.

Newsroom employees are more likely to be white and male than U.S. workers overall. There are signs, though, of a turning tide: Younger newsroom employees show greater racial, ethnic and gender diversity than their older colleagues, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data.
More than three-quarters (77 percent) of newsroom employees — those who work as reporters, editors, photographers and videographers in the newspaper, broadcasting and internet publishing industries — are non-Hispanic whites, according to the analysis of 2012-2016 American Community Survey data.

Congratulations, your book has been published. Whether it’s traditionally produced or it’s been self-published, either way, you now have a brand-new book ready to share with readers. It’s an exciting time — but you quickly learn your work is not over. It’s time for the next step: Marketing.
That word can make authors break out in a cold sweat or want to flee and hide out in a cave. Images of being hunched over the computer for hours peddling your book on social media or arranging book signings only to have your mother be the one person who shows up haunt your thoughts.

Newsrooms across the country are struggling to survive, and studies have shown that some of our communities don't trust us as much as they used too. So how do we find out if and why people trust us? And then, how do we learn what they need from us to come back, or subscribe for the first time?
Plenty of experts have weighed in on the struggles of current day journalism; the lack of diversity in our coverage and in our newsrooms, online paywalls, lack of dependable delivery of the print product, websites that are not user friendly, lack of advertising, a half-cocked pivot to video and plenty else.
