MEMBER-EXCLUSIVE NEWS
Email subject line: Get cookin', ASJA
Thanksgiving will look a little (or a lot) different this year, but hopefully for everyone it will still involve delicious food. For my family full of dietary restrictions and picky eaters (fewer this year, but still applies), I make an apple-pear-cranberry crumble, with almond flour and gluten-free oats, for dessert in lieu of a traditional pie. It’s also much easier if you’re not inclined toward pastry-making. Tip: Adding toasted chopped pecans, flaky sea salt, fresh grated nutmeg (and other spices of choice), and lemon juice and zest to the crumble mix takes it to the next level. What are some of your favorite Thanksgiving dishes and cooking secrets? Cheers! Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly editor

Member Success Story: Cari Shane, Washington, DC
Cari Shane broke into new markets by taking part in ASJA events and diligently preparing before each one. “I’ve been a member of ASJA for about four years, but it wasn’t until I started reading all the emails and taking advantage of all the events — virtual and live (pre-Covid) — that things really picked up for me,” she said. Cari offers some great tips for building rapport with editors -- preparation, persistence and patience are key! Read more about Cari's ASJA Member Success Story here.

Our members have told us loud and clear: More webinars and online virtual learning opportunities, please! With that in mind, ASJA will be developing a virtual education program, and we're looking for the right volunteer to lead this effort. The best candidate will have experience developing webinars and virtual programming via Zoom, as well as a keen interest in creating programming for freelance writers in our three focus areas: journalism, content marketing, and books. The coordinator will work with the president, other board members and staff to develop a calendar of events, recruit event moderators and panels, and create a model for the execution of these online events. Interested? Laura Laing can send you a job description. Email her at lelaing@gmail.com.

Tips For a Happy and Productive Partnership with Your Editor
From longtime member Jodie Gould...
While I see myself primarily as a writer, I also work as an editor and writing coach. As an editor, I rewrite and polish other people’s prose. Like a caring parent, I develop manuscripts from conception to publication and nurture fragile egos. The advice that follows will help you forge a strong, amicable, and productive partnership (with bonus tips for editors, should you ever find yourself on the other side of the margin).

How Cooperative Buying Will Bring Cost Savings To Our Industry
Editor and Publisher
As the printing and publishing industry adjusts to change, we continue to seek new and more financially responsible ways to maintain sustainability — or in some unique cases find profitability. The informational services we strive to provide for our communities have become more expensive year over year and as a result many of our margins have been reduced, in some cases eliminated.
