Okay, honestly, it feels sort of (extremely) done and pat to make the Thanksgiving week newsletter theme “I’m thankful for (blank).” But you can’t really argue with the timeliness, no matter how unoriginal. And, hopefully, gratitude never goes out of style. So, let’s all agree, originality be blasted, and lean into the thankful theme. What about ASJA makes you most grateful? The resources, the camaraderie, the events? Feel free to be as specific as you want. I’ll start a Facebook thread. Wishing everyone a happy, healthy Thanksgiving. All the best, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly Editor

Paycheck — Yelp for Professional Freelance Writers — Is Back!
ASJA
Do you want to tell other members what it’s like to work with a particular client or publisher? Are you looking for feedback on what an outlet pays or whether they pay on time? We’re proud to announce that ASJA’s Paycheck Database is back! This program is a bit like Yelp for freelance writers. You can submit your personal reviews here, and read others’ reviews here. The more submissions we have, the better the resource! Your name will never be published with your review (and you don’t even have to list your name). We do require the name of the outlet/publication/company. This is a member-only benefit, so you must be logged in to the website to submit a review or read reviews.

Member News
ASJA
Paul Nicolaus wrote an article for Fodor’s Travel about Florida's Fruit & Spice Park. The assignment came after viewing an ASJA travel writing webinar and meeting with one of the publication’s editors during a Virtual Client Connections event.
Ann Hoffner has been named a Contributing Editor by "Ocean Navigator" magazine. Her new masthead listing is an honor that doesn't come with a raise or a party, just thanks, says editor Tim Queeney.
Do you have professional news you’d like to share with the group? A new job, a story you’ve published (in article, blog post, book, cave painting, etc. form), a new project you’ve launched, an interview with someone fascinating, a speaking gig? Send your news (50 words or less, I will cut) and a link if applicable to Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly editor at hello@redpeneditorial.co (that’s .co like Coco Chanel or you go, Glen Coco). Please put “ASJA Member News” in your subject line or it might not be seen.

Tool for journalists: Global South Climate Database, for diversifying your climate coverage
journalism.co.uk
Many newsrooms are stepping up their efforts to cover climate. However, despite it being a global story, voices from the global north dominate the discourse, while countries from the global south are the most affected by the effects of the climate crisis.
Not so long ago, even climate experts from the global north were largely unknown to the journalist community. The task was made somehow simpler by Reuters which compiled a database of 1,000 "most influential" climate scientists, ranking them by their publication record and social media influence.

Tips for journalists working outside major cities
International Journalists' Network
Big cities seem to be the centers of everything, including the media industry. One in five newsroom employees in the U.S. work in New York, Los Angeles or Washington, D.C. In the U.K., 39% of all freelancers and 49% of all employee journalists live in London. For journalism graduates worldwide, heading to a big city to find work is almost a rite of passage.
