ASJA
Every night is free time on the ASJA Cuba trip. You’re on your own to explore wherever you like, so what’s there to do?
Join the Cubans for the promenade along the Malecon. It’s the gathering place and pastime every evening and it’s free.
In the 1950s, tourists flocked to the Tropicana cabaret for its colorful extravaganza and they still do. It’s also a cab ride, outdoors, and $95, that’s U.S. dollars, just to enter. One of many cabarets, it’s been open since 1939.
Enough of nostalgia? What’s happening now? Yes, Havana is hopping. Check out the late-night scene.
Join ASJA friends in Cuba March 21-28, 2020. Call Charles Bittner at 617-833-1435 for more information and to register.

We love to share stories of the successes experienced by ASJA members. These anecdotes come in all forms: landing work following a Client Connections meeting or one of the virtual events, placing an article in a dream publication, learning a new way to negotiate better fees, finding an anchor client or becoming more confident in the ability to produce good quality work for their clients.
We need your help to post more of these inspiring stories, to nudge along current ASJA members and to encourage new people to join. It doesn’t take long to submit a story. The template is short and we don’t need a lot of detail — just enough to show people how an ASJA membership can help grow your business. You can find other stories on the Member Success Stories page. If you have one to share, just follow the template and send your story to Marijke Vroomen Durning at marijke@medhealthwriter.com. Let’s share our news and inspire others!

A bill introduced in the New Jersey state legislature could effectively end independent contract work for many residents in the state if passed.
New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney introduced bill S4204 in early November, which proposed dramatic changes to the state employment code that would redefine many independent contractors as employees. The measure defines the change as "individuals who perform services for remuneration shall be deemed employees, not independent contractors."

Most of us experience the freelance rate plateau and become frustrated. People who go into a weight loss regimen reach plateaus. Plateaus for freelancers are especially frustrating, because they mean that income is stalled.
These plateaus may be the result of being maxed out on the number of hours you can possibly put in or the fear that your current or prospective customers may balk at you raising your rates and thus go elsewhere. Both of these are realities in the freelancing work life.

Doing journalism in the current climate of mistrust and suspicion can feel like rowing a small boat in an increasingly choppy sea. We’re rowing as hard as we can, just as we were taught, yet still getting tossed around and even overboard. While we row, we might be longing for the good old days of calmer waters, in which journalists (with fully staffed newsrooms) were seen as trusted, authoritative sources of nonpartisan information.

The benefits of being able to work from anywhere has allowed people to find a work/life balance they are happy with. However, freelancers and remote workers who work alone most of the time are experiencing the negative side of working this way.
According to a new survey from Viking, more than half of the respondents say they feel lonely, anxious and depressed. Even though working as a freelancer has its benefits, human beings are social creatures and working alone for extended periods has negative consequences.

The way we frame the problem has a lot to do with the solutions we end up with.
As journalists, we are hard-wired to tackle difficulties head-on, asking direct questions, and looking for verifiable evidence to support the predictable outcome.
However, this strategy can feel too abrupt when we want to engage our communities. Truly engaging with people requires a deep understanding and that is precisely where direct questions may hamper the newsgathering process.
