Greetings! Hope everyone who celebrates had a happy/safe Thanksgiving. Mine was met with a bit of, indeed, unexpected chaos when my daughter brought lice home (and to my parents’ home) from preschool. As freelance writers and editors, we often help clients deal with/prepare for unexpected chaos. And you – this is me being a bit of a cheerleader – deserve to be properly acknowledged, appreciated, and compensated for that. Whether it’s banking evergreen stories, being on call as a copy editor, offering content strategy, or more, you help keep your clients in (relative) order. Hopefully without bug infestations. Unless you’re an entomology writer.
All the best, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly Editor

Paycheck — Yelp for Professional Freelance Writers — Is Back!
ASJA
Do you want to tell other members what it’s like to work with a particular client or publisher? Are you looking for feedback on what an outlet pays or whether they pay on time? We’re proud to announce that ASJA’s Paycheck Database is back! This program is a bit like Yelp for freelance writers. You can submit your personal reviews here, and read others’ reviews here. The more submissions we have, the better the resource! Your name will never be published with your review (and you don’t even have to list your name). We do require the name of the outlet/publication/company. This is a member-only benefit, so you must be logged in to the website to submit a review or read reviews.

Pro-journalism legislation faces a make-or-break session
Local News Initiative
With the midterm elections coming up on Nov. 8, the lame-duck session could be the last realistic chance for Congress to pass this bipartisan effort to make Google and Facebook pay for local news content on their platforms.
U.S. Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., a lead sponsor of the measure, believes the legislation is likely to win approval in a matter of weeks, he said in an interview.

8 Twitter alternatives for journalists
journalism.com.uk
Since Elon Musk took over Twitter last month, it has been a bit of carnage. He laid off half of the company and decimated content moderation teams, which in turn emboldened trolls. The verified tick - ostensibly a marker of authenticity - has been paywalled to an initial $8-a-month subscription to Twitter Blue, fuelling impersonators and forcing users to sign up or lose their verified status.
Since then, many journalists made grand pronouncements about leaving the platform. The problem is, there is no one place where everyone else is going.

Iraqi journalists watch Telegram: Telegram is watching them back
Columbia Journlaism Review
Salhy is Iraqi, and in 2004 covered the Battle of Fallujah and the American invasion. She is not easily frightened. But as Iraq changed in the years since, paramilitaries have taken prominent roles in the country’s economy, security, and government and operate with practical impunity. Since the end of 2019, paramilitaries are suspected to have been behind at least thirty-six assassinations, with activists and journalists as their primary targets.
