Many of Cuba’s national holidays celebrate historical triumphs such as Castro’s rise to power, and they are marked by military parades, demonstrations and speeches. There are fewer religious holidays than in other Latin countries because of the government’s strained relationship with religion. January 1 does double duty. As Triumph of the Revolution Day, it honors Castro’s victory, and as Nino de Atocha’s Day, it’s devoted to the Christ child and Elegua, the foremost deity in Santeria.
ASJA’s cultural tour falls between the February Cigar Festival in Havana and Cine Pobre, the largest Cuban film festival, in April. This festival showcases the very best of Cuba’s low-budget movies in outdoor screenings.
Come along with ASJA to Cuba March 21-28, 2020. Call travel planner Charles Bittner at 617-833-1435 for more information and to register.

It's time for some publishing wisdom. Many people are freelance writers as side hustles. They write books, articles, brochures, or novels, while also holding a full-time job. Without years of experience in writing, there are some mistakes that everyone can make, if they are not careful.
As a writing coach and NYU professor I work with my students to build their portfolio and get the attention of editors.
I always tell them there is one way to immediately get sent to the slush pile.

Today, 1 in 3 working Americans are freelancing. That’s about 57 million workers from a force of 160 million, up 4 million (13%) since 2014.
Freelancers are experts in their own fields, but they are also business managers: branding themselves, marketing their services, managing finances — and negotiating deals with potential clients. Those conversations can be challenging for independent contractors.

Patricia Jacobson had been working on her novel "Fern" since 1986. She was beyond excited to call herself a published author at last, when her first five copies arrived a month ago at The Heights senior living home in Burbank, California where she lives ...
When Jacobson started writing "Fern" — based on the hardscrabble life of children in her native Kentucky during the Depression — she thought she’d need to find a literary agent and pitch publishers. That’s not how the book saw its way into print, though. She self-published it, creating and financing the printing of her book.

Every time I’m asked to write a 150-word bio, I freeze.
My professional life has had a lot of iterations, ranging from launching newsrooms on Snapchat and Kik to covering politics and breaking news with voicemails and, most recently, reporting and writing a book.
For years at the beginning of my career, I was simply the internet kid. I began working in large, legacy newsrooms. At my first few jobs, my titles were fluid, my duties unspecific. I was defined, mostly, by the fact that I knew how to internet.
