ASJA friends, I could use your advice, please. I recently began treatment for breast cancer. It’s going to be a long (about a year), multistage process, and I don’t know how I’m going to feel each step of the way. I’m at a loss about how to handle work: How much to take on, how to plan ahead, what, if anything, to say to clients, how public to be? Anyone who has experience navigating a freelance writing business through an acute health crisis, if you’re willing to share your insights, please get in touch (hello@redpeneditorial.co). And if anyone else is in need of such advice, I’m happy to pass along any wisdom sent my way. With appreciation, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly Editor P.S. Next week will be more cheerful, I promise.

Paycheck — Yelp for Professional Freelance Writers — Is Back!
ASJA
Do you want to tell other members what it’s like to work with a particular client or publisher? Are you looking for feedback on what an outlet pays or whether they pay on time? We’re proud to announce that ASJA’s Paycheck Database is back! This program is a bit like Yelp for freelance writers. You can submit your personal reviews here, and read others’ reviews here. The more submissions we have, the better the resource! Your name will never be published with your review (and you don’t even have to list your name). We do require the name of the outlet/publication/company. This is a member-only benefit, so you must be logged in to the website to submit a review or read reviews.

Got News?
ASJA
ASJA members can share their writing news using a nifty form at https://www.asja.org/submit-member-news/. (You must be logged in to see this member-only page.) After approval, your submission will appear on the Member News page. The submission also goes to Holly, our esteemed Weekly newsletter editor, who will add it here. And Stephanie, our ASJA Magazine editor, will pull relevant news from the Member News page on the website to include in the print publication. What’s stopping you? Add your news about new book publications, especially important articles, and awards! Please allow 3-5 days for your submission to appear on the website.

Make Your Department of Labor Comment Before December 13
ASJA
The Department of Labor’s proposed rule to redefine who is an independent contractor is open for comments through December 13. Please submit a comment. Fight for Freelancers prepared a template for those interested, basically where you share your story and ask for the current rule to remain in place. ASJA member Susan Johnston Taylor shows how you can do a short but effective comment. To learn more about the issue, listen to ASJA member Kim Kavin on a podcast explaining the proposed rule and the background. It’s an hour, but well worth the listen.

Member News
ASJA
Ann Hoffner has been named a Contributing Editor by "Ocean Navigator" magazine. Her new masthead listing is an honor that doesn't come with a raise or a party, just thanks, says editor Tim Queeney.
Do you have professional news you’d like to share with the group? A new job, a story you’ve published (in article, blog post, book, cave painting, etc. form), a new project you’ve launched, an interview with someone fascinating, a speaking gig? Send your news (50 words or less, I will cut) and a link if applicable to Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly editor at hello@redpeneditorial.co (that’s .co like Coco Chanel or you go, Glen Coco). Please put “ASJA Member News” in your subject line or it might not be seen.

Media Update
Freelancers, your earning potential is, well, limitless really. So, it's no surprise that determining how much you should charge for your services causes quite a dilemma.

What publishers can learn from gaming
journalism.co.uk
Journalists have used games to tell stories since the early 2000s but so-called newsgames, games that fold journalism into gameplay, are yet to convince editors to add them to their everyday coverage.
Instead, more typical digital reporting is attempting to ape what makes gaming so compelling and able to command consistently large audiences – and revenue.

Everything to know about Canada's Online News Act hearings
Columbia Journalism Review
Parliamentary hearings for Canada’s Online News Act–or the Liberal government’s attempt to rectify the imbalance between platforms and publishers–have so far yielded insight into the news industry’s reluctance to wholly embrace the legislation as it stands. The hearings have also captured the attention of stakeholders not only in Canada but globally as countries, including the US, Brazil, and India, consider legislation of their own.

Is long-form journalism dying? A 5-minute read
The Hill
Amid relentless teletype buzz of bad news, the newspaper industry printed an obituary this week for one of its last traditional sources of long-read journalism: the Washington Post Sunday magazine.
Pressed for an explanation by her staff, Executive Editor Sally Buzbee blamed the magazine’s demise on “economic headwinds,” according to unnamed staffers who attended a grim postmortem.

Vicarious trauma: Considerations for news leaders
journlaims.co.uk
Throughout this year, we have heard from increasing numbers of journalists, concerned about the risk of vicarious or secondary trauma. They wanted tools and tips that would help them recognise it and protect themselves and others against it, at a time when some of our usual coping mechanisms might have been compromised by the stressors of the past few years.
