I have been staring at my computer screen for the last hour, trying to decide what to write this intro about: The best holiday recipes (this gingerbread, but double the spices and add some black pepper)? Dirty news guilty pleasures (my latest is the pathological liar “Grey’s Anatomy” writer – patently disgusting and may she never get payment nor recognition for another word she writes, but also get on this, Netflix)? Kicking off a discussion about what skill/knowledge set folks most recommend adding to one’s repertoire in 2023? (I mean, it’s not a bad question). But like many of you, by this point of the year, I’m tired and wanting to put whatever energy I have into enjoying the holidays and recharging for the new year. So… how do you plan to rejuvenate for 2023? Seriously, though, make that gingerbread. Fabulous. Cheers, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly Editor

Paycheck — Yelp for Professional Freelance Writers — Is Back!
ASJA
Do you want to tell other members what it’s like to work with a particular client or publisher? Are you looking for feedback on what an outlet pays or whether they pay on time? We’re proud to announce that ASJA’s Paycheck Database is back! This program is a bit like Yelp for freelance writers. You can submit your personal reviews here, and read others’ reviews here. The more submissions we have, the better the resource! Your name will never be published with your review (and you don’t even have to list your name). We do require the name of the outlet/publication/company. This is a member-only benefit, so you must be logged in to the website to submit a review or read reviews.

Journalism educators have a moral obligation to their students
Poynter
Democracy cannot survive for long without a vibrant and independent press. So the journalism and communications programs where many of tomorrow’s journalists learn have a moral obligation to reimagine what they do.
They must educate journalists to thrive in today’s chaotic environment even as they prepare them to pave the way toward a new and more sustainable journalism in the future.

8 things more important than a college degree for a freelancer
MakeUseOf
