Folks, this will be the final “regular” newsletter of the year. How in the blazes is it already mid-December? Does that just feel wrong to anyone else? Objections to the all-too-quick passage of time aside, there’s a lot to look forward to in 2023: Volunteer opportunities, increased resources, virtual education, plenty of chances to enhance and grow your business and your relationships with ASJA. Over the next couple of weeks, I hope you’ll have time to unplug, take a break, drink some hot chocolate, and then find some stress-free time to get your ducks in a row. Not sure what to do with the ducks once they’re all lined up. Shoot them? Teach them the Electric Slide? Cook them for Christmas dinner? Make way for them? Ducks aside, wishing you a happy, peaceful holiday season and a healthy, prosperous new year. Cheers, Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly Editor

Paycheck — Yelp for Professional Freelance Writers — Is Back!
ASJA
Do you want to tell other members what it’s like to work with a particular client or publisher? Are you looking for feedback on what an outlet pays or whether they pay on time? We’re proud to announce that ASJA’s Paycheck Database is back! This program is a bit like Yelp for freelance writers. You can submit your personal reviews here, and read others’ reviews here. The more submissions we have, the better the resource! Your name will never be published with your review (and you don’t even have to list your name). We do require the name of the outlet/publication/company. This is a member-only benefit, so you must be logged in to the website to submit a review or read reviews.

Member News
ASJA
Do you have professional news you’d like to share with the group? A new job, a story you’ve published (in article, blog post, book, cave painting, etc. form), a new project you’ve launched, an interview with someone fascinating, a speaking gig? Send your news (50 words or less, I will cut) and a link if applicable to Holly Leber Simmons, ASJA Weekly editor at hello@redpeneditorial.co (that’s .co like Coco Chanel or you go, Glen Coco). Please put “ASJA Member News” in your subject line or it might not be seen.

This one skill helps me earn more money as a freelancer
The Motley Fool
Maurie Backman writes: I like to think that I'm a decent writer who's well-versed in the personal finance topics I cover often. But that's not the key to being able to maintain a decent workflow -- and paycheck -- as a freelance worker. Rather, I think it's my ability to manage my time well that's allowed me to boost my income and pad my savings account through the years.

Are you a freelancer? Does the government agree?
Poynter
As newsrooms have laid off more and more journalists, those former employees have found themselves with a choice: Do I return to a staff job with some of the same problems, do I leave the profession altogether or do I try something different? Needless to say, some choose the final option, embarking on a path of self-employment with its own pros and cons.

How to document your workflow process as a freelancer
MakeUseOf
In most work environments, your workflow processes are usually already in place for you to follow. As a freelancer, however, this is something that you will have to develop and implement yourself. This can be intimidating at first—but after some experimenting, the flexibility to choose your own workflow documentation can be empowering.

journalism.co.uk
Many journalists have great ideas about improving their publications but struggle to make them happen. For smaller newsrooms where everyone does a little bit of everything, having the right tools to create new products can mean the difference between being profitable and folding in.
