From June 5: The life of a freelance journalist is only getting grimmer. The money’s worse, publishers demand more rights, and the labor pool expands by the day. All of this can make it tempting to focus on finding paying work wherever we can and letting the details slide.
“Lawyers have a saying: You name the price, I’ll name the terms,” says David Lizerbram, an intellectual property attorney in San Diego. “For those of us who deal with the nitty gritty, contract terms are really where the action is. All these things really do matter.”

From May 29: Success as a freelancer means constantly cultivating new clients, commanding better rates, and developing a great reputation in your field. Unfortunately, many freelancers still find that their growth stalls.

From March 27:
Imagine you come to a salon to get a haircut. You see two available professionals — someone with a “trainee” badge and and a regular employee. Now unless you want to get a heavily discounted, but possibly awkward, haircut, you’d likely choose a “pro” right?
When it comes to freelancing, most clients would prefer to deal with pros, not a beginner. In fact, if you want to draw in a better class of clients, earn higher rates and spend less time negotiating, you should be positioning yourself as an expert.

The Writer
From Aug. 14: Once upon a time, fiction ruled the market. Today, however, nonfiction is just as heavily competitive – and memoir is a key corner of that genre. Consider some famous best-selling memoirs from the recent past: Joan Didion’s "The Year of Magical Thinking," Jeannette Walls’ "The Glass Castle," Elizabeth Gilbert’s "Eat, Pray, Love," and, most recently, J.D. Vance’s "Hillbilly Elegy."

From June 5: Working for yourself comes with a lot of temptations, especially if you work from home. There’s tv, website after website, and even housework to put before your actual freelancing work. Plus, when you need to do all your own marketing, accounting and the actual work, it’s easy for your work day to get derailed. You’re the boss of yourself, and you need to hold yourself accountable.

From Aug. 28: The newspaper, magazine or web editor loves the freelance article you submitted and says “Yes!” Before you jump up and down and share the news to your 10,000 social media friends, beware the worst that has happened to more than one freelance writer:
