Immigration telephone scam targets non-resident aliens

We wanted to alert ASPET members and institutions about a telephone scam that has circulated through NIH that seeks information and money from visiting fellows and other non-resident aliens. Similar scams like this occur elsewhere, and there is some probability that this has or will happen at other institutions around the country.

Washington Post columnist George Will calls sequester a public health hazard

Syndicated Washington Post columnist George Will published an interesting op-ed piece, "The sequester's a public health hazard" (Aug. 16). Will suggests that "To see the federal government at its best, and sequester-driven spending cuts at their worst, visit the 322 acres where 25,000 people work for the National Institutes of Health.

Camp EB child care
ASPET
Camp EB welcomes children ages 6 months to 17 years. Children participate in age-appropriate activities including arts and crafts projects, active games and much more in a safe, nurturing environment. Meals are not included in the camp fees. Sequestration ushers in a dark age for science in America

On the first floor of Jordan Hall at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is a 12-by-8 room that, at first glance, looks like a rundown storage space. The floor is a mix of white, teal and purple tiles, in a pattern reminiscent of the 1970s. Trash cans are without tops and half filled. There are rust stains on the tiles, and a loose air vent dangles a bit from the ceiling. It is only when you see four incubators attached to six tanks of carbon dioxide that you get the feeling something more intriguing is taking place here.

Investigational oral regimen for hepatitis C shows promise in NIH trial
National Institutes of Health
In a study of an all-oral drug regimen, a majority of volunteers with liver damage due to hepatitis C virus infection were cured following a six-month course of therapy that combined an experimental drug, sofosbuvir, with the licensed antiviral drug ribavirin. The results showed that the regimen was highly effective in clearing the virus and well tolerated in a group of patients who historically have had unfavorable prognoses.
