The New ASPET Officers have been elected
ASPET
Congratulations to the newly elected 2014 ASPET officers. Drs. Thummel, Marshall, and Gnegy will take office July 1, 2014 as President-Elect, Secretary/Treasurer-Elect, and Councilor, respectively. Division officers for the divisions of Neuropharmacology, Toxicology, Drug Metabolism, Molecular Pharmacology, and Integrative Systems, Translational, & Clinical Pharmacology have also been elected.

ASPET Members Achieve: R. Clinton Webb, PhD
ASPET
ASPET recognizes member, R. Clinton Webb, PhD from Georgia Regents University for his contributions to cardiovascular pharmacology. R. Clinton Webb graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1971 and received his PhD in Anatomy from the University of Iowa in 1976. After postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan and the Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen, he joined the faculty of the Department of Physiology at the University of Michigan in 1979.

FASEB Data Show Impact of Budget Cuts to NIH

According to data released by FASEB, funding for biomedical research was dramatically cut in fiscal year 2013. The data compiled from NIH statistics indicates the number of research grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health fell to the lowest level in 15 years.

NMDA receptors can be blocked to limit neurotoxicity

Structural biologists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and collaborators at Emory University have obtained important scientific results likely to advance efforts to develop new drugs targeting NMDA receptors in the brain. NMDA (N-methyl D-aspartate) receptors are found on the surface of many nerve cells and are involved in signaling that is essential in basic brain functions including learning and memory formation.

Drug company launches global hunt for 'superhumans'

A drug maker has enlisted the help of the general public to track down people with extraordinary characteristics whose genetic makeup could form the basis of new medicines. UCB, a Belgian pharmaceutical company, has launched a competition to find and describe individuals, families or communities who possess rare characteristics such as low sensitivity to pain or the ability to heal from injury quickly.

NIH scientists map genetic changes that drive tumors in pediatric cancer
National Institutes of Health
Scientists have mapped the genetic changes that drive tumors in rhabdomyosarcoma, a pediatric soft-tissue cancer, and found that the disease is characterized by two distinct genotypes. The genetic alterations identified in this malignancy could be useful in developing targeted diagnostic tools and treatments for children with the disease.
