Legislative Update: February 18, 2014

The House and Senate passed a clean debt ceiling limit extension through March 15, 2015. Passage removes the immediate threat of potential budget cuts to federal programs. Many conservative members of the House and Senate wanted one dollar in budget cuts for every dollar increase in the debt limit. Some conservative groups have called the vote a "complete capitulation." With the debt limit extension put to rest, Congress can now turn to FY 2015 appropriations.

NIH Partners Form Accelerating Medicines Partnerships

The National Institutes of Health, 10 biopharmaceutical companies, and several nonprofit organizations on Tuesday launched "an unprecedented partnership to transform the current model for identifying and validating the most promising biological targets of disease for new diagnostics and drug development."

Bacterial superbug protein structure solved

Scientists have deciphered the 3-D structure of a protein that confers antibiotic resistance from one of the most worrisome disease agents: a strain of bacteria called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which can cause skin and other infections. The team's findings may be an important step in combating the MRSA public health threat over the next 5 to 10 years.

Drug shows promise in treating kids with autism, researchers say

Building on what they hope will be an important insight into the cause of autism, French researchers are testing a high blood pressure medication on dozens of European children with autism. The team, which has a financial stake in the drug, has tried it on 30 children with autism; now they are testing it in more, hoping to improve core characteristics of autism for the first time.

Recent industry studies have reported failures to replicate preclinical results from NIH-funded studies in cancer and other biomedical research areas. In response, NIMH issued a notice in the NIH Guide (NOT-14-004) which illustrates our commitment to the highest standards of rigor in both pre-clinical and clinical research. In addition to rigor, transparency is essential with detailed information made available about study design, execution, analysis, and interpretation. Examples of critical elements for a well-designed study are summarized in Enhancing the Reliability of NIMH-supported Research through Rigorous Study Design and Reporting on the NIMH website.
