Today is the last day to submit symposium proposals for the ASPET 2016 Annual Meeting. Submit a proposal to your division chairs on topics broadly related to pharmacology. Proposals will be reviewed at the EB 2015 meeting and final decisions will be made in June 2015 by the program committee.

Proposed 2015 Changes to ASPET Bylaws

The ASPET Council has recently reviewed Society bylaws and proposed several revisions. At the upcoming ASPET Business Meeting in Boston, we will be asking the membership in attendance to vote to send the bylaws amendments out to the membership-at-large. Please take this opportunity to review the proposed changes to the Society's bylaws in advance of the meeting.

2015 National Directors of Graduate Studies (NDOGS) in Pharmacology & Physiology Meeting

Senate and House Budget Committees will start formulating their budget resolutions for FY 2016. The budget resolutions are merely spending blueprints and are not law. However, the budget resolution does establish top line spending limits for all discretionary spending.

Application Open for ASPET's 2016 Washington Fellows Program

The ASPET Washington Fellows Program is open to any graduate student, postdoctoral trainee, or researcher no more than four years past the completion of his/her postdoctoral training. ASPET anticipates up to 10 Washington Fellows Program participants in 2016 serving one-year terms. Applications to the program are being accepted through September 02, 2015.

Tests of cholesterol drugs offer hope of reducing heart attacks, strokes
The New York Times
A new class of experimental cholesterol drugs might sharply reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes, researchers report, citing what they described as preliminary evidence. The drugs are already known to sharply reduce so-called bad cholesterol, sometimes to levels lower than those achieved by statins like Lipitor, the mainstay lipid-lowering medicines.

New colon cancer culprit found by vet researchers

Colon cancer is a heavily studied disease — and for good reason. It is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and its numbers are on the rise, from 500,00 deaths in 1990 to 700,000 in 2010. This growth comes despite scientists' ever-increasing knowledge of the genetic mutations that initiate and drive this disease. Now, a team of researchers has found evidence of a new culprit in the disease, a protein called MSI2.

Bioengineers put human hearts on a chip to aid drug screening

When UC Berkeley bioengineers say they are holding their hearts in the palms of their hands, they are not talking about emotional vulnerability. Instead, the research team is presenting a network of pulsating cardiac muscle cells housed in an inch-long silicone device that effectively models human heart tissue, and they have demonstrated the viability of this system as a drug-screening tool by testing it with cardiovascular medications.
