Vote on the Proposed 2015 Changes to ASPET Bylaws

The ASPET Council recently proposed several revisions to the Society's bylaws. At the ASPET Business Meeting in Boston, membership in attendance was asked to vote to send the bylaws amendments out to the membership-at-large. Please take this opportunity to review the proposed changes to the bylaws in advance of casting your vote. Voting will close at 5:00 PM on Friday, May 15, 2015.

2015 National Directors of Graduate Studies (NDOGS) in Pharmacology & Physiology Meeting

The biennial meeting of the National Directors of Graduate Studies in Pharmacology and Physiology (NDOGS) will be held in Cincinnati from July 10-12, 2015. A collaborative effort between ASPET and APS, the meeting has broad participation among colleagues who are working for a common cause and who face similar challenges.

ASPET Announces Two Editor Searches

Dr. Michael F. Jarvis and Dr. David R. Sibley will complete their terms as editor of JPET and PharmRev, respectively, at the end of this year. The BPT is seeking nominees for their successors. The deadline for nominations for both positions is 5:00 PM EST on April 15, 2015. Self-nominations are welcome.

ASPET FY'16 Congressional Testimony Supports $32 Billion for NIH
ASPET
ASPET has submitted a written testimony recommending at least $32 billion for the NIH FY 2016 budget. A budget consisting of the proposed amount would enable the NIH to fund 465 more research grants and help restore the agency's lost purchasing power that has occurred over the past decade.

Application Open for ASPET's 2016 Washington Fellows Program
ASPET
The ASPET Washington Fellows Program is open to any graduate student, postdoctoral trainee, or researcher no more than four years past the completion of his/her postdoctoral training. ASPET anticipates up to 10 Washington Fellows Program participants in 2016 serving one-year terms. Applications to the program are being accepted through September 02, 2015.

Is the drug industry on the right track in Alzheimer's research?

Just days after Biogen revealed promising early data from an experimental Alzheimer's treatment, new research from the Mayo Clinic may revive a long-running debate over whether the drug industry is focusing on the right target in developing therapies to treat the disease. The study, published in the journal Brain, found that the accumulation of dysfunctional tau protein is the real source of cognitive decline and memory loss seen in Alzheimer's.

Researchers develop new potential drug for rare leukemia
Medical Xpress
Researchers have developed a new drug that shows potential in laboratory studies against a rare type of acute leukemia. And additional studies suggest the same compound could play a role in prostate cancer treatment as well. The compound was developed by researchers who have been working for several years to identify a small-molecule inhibitor that would block the interaction between the protein menin and MLL fusion proteins that cause a rare type of acute leukemia.

Gene identified that drives aggressive form of breast cancer
Medical News Today
A team of researchers have identified a gene that drives one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer. They hope that by finding a way to block the gene they may be able to make the cancer less aggressive. The authors believe the most aggressive form of triple-negative breast cancer originates from stem cells. The study was published in Nature Communications.
