Award Highlight! New ASPET Award: The Reynold Spector Award in Clinical Pharmacology

ASPET is pleased to establish the Reynold Spector Award in Clinical Pharmacology, a new society award in recognition of Dr. Spector's dedication and contributions to clinical pharmacology. The award recognizes excellence in research and/or teaching in clinical pharmacology, and was made possible by an endowment to ASPET from Dr. Reynold and Mrs. Michiko Spector. Researchers find new target for chronic pain treatment

Researchers at the UNC School of Medicine have found a new target for treating chronic pain: an enzyme called PIP5K1C. In a paper published in the journal Neuron, a team of researchers shows that PIP5K1C controls the activity of cellular receptors that signal pain. By reducing the level of the enzyme, researchers showed that the levels of a crucial lipid called PIP2 in pain-sensing neurons is also lessened, thus decreasing pain.

Potential drug target for PTSD prevention
Science Daily
A drug that appears to make memories of fearsome events less durable in mice has been discovered by researchers. The finding may accelerate the development of treatments for preventing PTSD. The drug, called osanetant, targets a distinct group of brain cells in a region of the brain that controls the formation and consolidation of fear memories.

Progesterone could become tool to fight brain cancer
Neuroscience News
The hormone progesterone could become part of therapy against the most aggressive form of brain cancer. High concentrations of progesterone kill glioblastoma cells and inhibit tumor growth when the tumors are implanted in mice, researchers have found. The results were recently published in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
