It is presented biennially in odd numbered years at the ASPET Annual Meeting for significant contributions made over many years to the advancement of pharmacology. NIH Issues Revised Policy on IDPs

Last summer, NIH released a notice that encouraged institutions to develop Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. NIH has now posted a revised policy to clarify implementation and reporting expectations for this policy, effective for progress reports received on/after October 1, 2014.

NIGMS Issues "Stories of Basic Science to Medical Advances" Challenge

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) has announced the requirements and registration information for its "Stories of Basic Science to Medical Advances" Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to link NIGMS-supported basic science to the development of new medical applications.

The ASPET Washington Fellows Program enables early career scientists interested in science policy to learn about and become more engaged in public policy issues. The program is open to any graduate student, postdoctoral trainee, or researcher no more than four years past the completion of his/her postdoctoral training. Apply for the fellowship by September 2, 2014, 5:00 PM EDT.

Researchers reveal weakness in defenses of deadly brain tumor

Glioblastoma is a complex, deadly and hard-to-treat brain cancer, but Yale School of Medicine researchers may have found the tumor's Achilles heel. The researchers report in the Aug. 12 issue of the journal Science Signaling that targeting a protein crucial in the early development of the brain can block multiple signaling pathways implicated in glioblastoma growth. The approach also reduced human tumors in mouse models of the disease.

New mouse model points to therapy for liver disease

A novel mouse model that closely resembles human NASH has been described by researchers. They use it to demonstrate that interference with a key inflammatory protein inhibits both the development of NASH and its progression to liver cancer.

Experimental chikungunya vaccine induces robust antibody response
National Institutes of Health
An experimental vaccine to prevent the mosquito-borne viral illness chikungunya elicited neutralizing antibodies in all 25 adult volunteers who participated in a recent early-stage clinical trial conducted by researchers at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health. The results are reported in the current issue of The Lancet.
