Division of Toxicology Announces Two New Awards
ASPET
The Division of Toxicology has announced two new awards to be presented at the ASPET Annual Meeting in Boston next year: the Junior Investigator Award and the Career Achievement Award. Awardees will receive a plaque and cash stipend. Applications for both awards are being received through November 15.

Division of Neuropharmacology Announces Inaugural Early Career Investigator Award
ASPET
The Division of Neuropharmacology is seeking nominations for the inaugural Neuropharmacology Early Career Investigator Award to be presented at the ASPET meeting in Boston in March 2015. The award will recognize and honor a young investigator who is working in any area of Neuropharmacology. Nominations are being accepted through December 15.

ASPET Opposes Legislation Impacting Federal Scientists Attending Conferences
ASPET
ASPET joined 123 organizations in a letter to Senate leadership opposing S. 1347, the "Conference Accountability Act of 2014." If this legislation is enacted it would place further burdens on already onerous restrictions that have impeded federal scientists from participating in scientific meetings and conferences.

Neural compensation found in people with Alzheimer's related protein
Neuroscience News
The human brain is capable of a neural workaround that compensates for the buildup of beta-amyloid, a destructive protein associated with Alzheimer's disease, according to a new study led by UC Berkeley researchers. The findings, published Sept. 14 in the journal Nature Neuroscience, could help explain how some older adults with beta-amyloid deposits in their brain retain normal cognitive function while others develop dementia.

New blood test could be first to detect clinical depression

Scientists are continually looking for better ways to detect this serious mental illness in patients who may not want to talk about it. Now a new study suggests that a simple blood test could soon allow doctors to diagnose clinical depression as easily as they check cholesterol.

FDA allows 1st use of a novel cancer drug
The New York Times
The Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first of an eagerly awaited new class of cancer drugs that unleashes the body's immune system to fight tumors. The drug, which Merck will sell under the name Keytruda, was approved for patients with advanced melanoma who have exhausted other therapies.
