November 1, 2013 Legislative Update: Will Congress fix sequestration?

The Washington Post reported last week that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) noted that "I hope that we can do some stuff to get rid of sequestration and go on to do some sensible budgets…I hope there would be a grand bargain but I don't see that happening." He made those comments in a radio interview as the first meeting of the budget conference committee was expected to begin.

Medical school deans, CEOs urge Congress to stop budget cuts to NIH

In mid-October, Congress finally resolved its differences allowing the federal government to re-open through January 15 and the nation's debt ceiling limit to be raised through February 7. For most federally funded grantees this resolution, however temporary, is good news.

Deadline for Best Abstract Award applications is November 13

Best Abstract Awards are given by ASPET's Divisions for abstracts submitted by postdocs and graduate students (and undergraduates as well for the Behavioral Pharmacology Division) to the ASPET Annual Meeting at EB 2014. Click on the appropriate link in the list below for further information. Criteria and awards vary among the Divisions. Finalists and winners may be asked to present their research at the Best Abstract Competition on Sunday evening, April 27 or at a Division session. Applicants must be ASPET members in good standing in order to apply for these awards, so apply or renew your membership NOW! The following Best Abstract Awards are being offered:
-Undergraduate Best Abstract Award
-Graduate Student Best Abstract
-Postdoctoral Scientist Award
-Young Investigator Award
Applications for the four aforementioned awards must be completed by November 13, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. EST by electronic Web submission.

Any student or postdoctoral fellow who has submitted an abstract in an ASPET topic category for the Annual Meeting at EB 2014 in San Diego is encouraged to apply for a Travel Award to attend the Annual Meeting. Applicants must be ASPET members in good standing in order to apply for these awards, so apply or renew your membership NOW! The following Travel Awards are being offered:
-Minority Graduate Student Travel Awards
-Young Scientist Travel Awards
-Minority Young Scientist Travel Awards
-Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Travel Awards
-Graduate Student Travel Awards

American Pain Society
The Rita Allen Foundation (RAF) and American Pain Society (APS) may award two grants in the amount of $50,000 annually, for a period of up to three years to those research proposals demonstrating the greatest merit and potential for success. Eligible candidates will have completed their training and provided persuasive evidence of distinguished achievement or extraordinary promise in basic science research in pain. The International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) will hold its 17th World Congress in Cape Town, South Africa (WCP 2014), July 13 – 18, 2014. The meeting is organized and hosted by the South African Society for Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (SASBCP). ASPET is offering travel awards to attend the WCP2014 for graduate student and young scientist members of ASPET in good standing to present a paper at the meeting. Travel Awards available for WCP 2014 include the James A. Bain Young Scientist Travel Award and the Graduate Student Travel Award. Applicants must already be a member to apply. Baby's HIV 'cure' might signal new approach

The so-called "Mississippi baby" might be the forerunner of a new approach to treating infants born with HIV, researchers reported. The child, whose mother was HIV-positive, was started on triple-drug therapy 30 hours after birth, according to Deborah Persaud, MD, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and colleagues.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have discovered a way to effectively deliver staurosporine (STS), a powerful anti-cancer compound that has vexed researchers for more than 30 years due to its instability in the blood and toxic nature in both healthy and cancerous cells. For the first time, the new method safely delivered STS to mouse tumors, suppressing them with no apparent side effects.

CBT trumps antipsychotic for augmentation, amending current guidelines

A form of behavioral therapy can augment antidepressant treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) better than an antipsychotic, researchers have found. They recommend that this specific form of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) — exposure and ritual prevention — be offered first to OCD patients who don't respond adequately to treatment with an antidepressant alone, which is often the case.
