The Division of Neuropharmacology is seeking nominations for the inaugural Neuropharmacology Early Career Investigator Award to be presented at the ASPET meeting in Boston in March 2015. The award will recognize and honor a young investigator who is working in any area of neuropharmacology. Nominations are being accepted through December 15.

According to the survey, compensation for life sciences professionals in the U.S., Canada, and Europe increased moderately since 2013, and some specialties, including genetics, genomics, and immunology, showed particularly notable increases.

Could a common blood pressure drug completely reverse diabetes?

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S., raising risks for heart attack, blindness, kidney disease and limb amputation. But researchers who have shown that a common blood pressure drug totally reverses diabetes in mice are about to begin a new clinical trial to see if it can do the same for humans. If the trial is successful, it could herald the first "cure" for an incurable disease that affects 12.3 percent of Americans over the age of 20.

Highly effective new anticancer drug shows few side effects

A new drug known as OTS964 can eradicate aggressive human lung cancers that were transplanted into mice, according to a new report. The drug inhibits the action of a protein that is overproduced by several tumor types, including lung and breast, but is rarely expressed in healthy adult tissues. Without this protein, cancer cells fail to complete the cell-division process and die. When taken by mouth, the drug was well tolerated with limited toxicity.
