Giving Tuesday is just around the corner: Consider donating to the Goodman & Gilman Award Endowment Fund
ASPET
We’ve all heard about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but have you heard about #GivingTuesday? The 2nd Annual #GivingTuesday, taking place on December 3, 2013, is a national day of giving that kicks off the start of the annual holiday season. #GivingTuesday celebrates and encourages charitable giving to support non-profit organizations. A great way to give back to your scientific community this year would be to help ASPET endow the Louis S. Goodman and Alfred Gilman Award, which was established to recognize and stimulate outstanding research in pharmacology. Our goal is to raise $60,000 to sustain this prestigious award and continue recognizing excellence in research by our members. Donate now and your tax-deductible gift will go twice as far through a Matching Program generously provided by an anonymous donor.

ASPET JOURNALS NEWS

What's in a name? ASPET adopts ORCID for journals
ASPET
The Drug Metabolism and Disposition, Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Molecular Pharmacology, and Pharmacological Reviews manuscript systems now accept ORCID IDs. As described on the ORCID website (www.orcid.org), ORCID "provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between you and your professional activities ensuring that your work is recognized." The use of ORCID IDs helps disambiguate authors with similar names and provides a consistent record for authors who change names or use variations of the same name (e.g., Joe Smith, J. Smith, J.A. Smith, and Joseph Smith).

There is no charge to register with ORCID, and its implementation into Bench>Press is unobtrusive and easy to use. When you register at ORCID, you can link your record to your publications, affiliations, grants, and patents. You have the option of providing biographical information as well. Publications can be added manually or by importing records from a number of databases such as the ANDS National Collections Registry in Australia, Europe PubMed Central, Scopus, ResearcherID, and CrossRef.

Register with ORCID at www.orcid.org.

NIH study finds low-intensity therapy for Burkitt lymphoma is highly effective
National Institutes of Health
Adult patients with a type of cancer known as Burkitt lymphoma had excellent long-term survival rates — upwards of 90 percent — following treatment with low-intensity chemotherapy regimens, according to a new clinical trial finding. Standard treatment for Burkitt lymphoma involves high-dose chemotherapy, which has a high rate of toxicity, including death, and cures only 60 percent of adult patients.

Dr. Francis Collins: Politics on the Frontier of Science
The Wall Street Journal
If the early years of the 21st century often feel like a retread of the 1970s — economic anxiety, turmoil overseas, American leaders who don't seem to understand what the problems are much less how to fix them — the geneticist Francis Collins suggests less dispiriting resemblances. The "arrow of progress that we're riding in biomedicine" took flight 40 or so years ago but is traveling faster and further now.

As nanotechnology is being used to develop new drugs, FDA is working to ensure quality, safety, and effectiveness
Food and Drug Administration
Nanotechnology is a new and exciting field that offers scientists the opportunity to control matter at very small dimensions, opening many possibilities for making all kinds of new products. This technology operates on an incredibly small scale that measures things in units called nanometers. One nanometer is one billionth of a meter. It's hard to even imagine how small that is, but here's one way to do it: A human hair is about 100,000 nanometers wide.
