December 16, 2013 Legislative Update: Does budget deal provide opportunity for increased funding?
ASPET
On December 12, the House voted 332-94 in favor of the Bipartisan Budget Act (BBA) of 2013, negotiated by House Budget Chairman Paul D. Ryan (R-WI) and Senate Budget Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-WA). The agreement funds federal agencies through the fall of 2015, avoids another government shutdown on January 15 (assuming passage by the Senate), and ends budget by crisis (for two years) that has afflicted the political process over the past few years.

Alzheimer's drug discovery: Looking under the right ROCK
Neuroscience News
A discovery by Emory Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and Scripps Research Institute scientists could lead to drugs that slow Alzheimer’s disease progression. A straightforward drug strategy against Alzheimer's is to turn down the brain's production of beta-amyloid, the key component of the disease’s characteristic plaques. A toxic fragment of a protein found in healthy brains, beta-amyloid accumulates in the brains of people affected by the disease.

New law enhances safety of compounded drugs and protection of the drug supply chain
Food and Drug Administration
Since last year's tragic meningitis outbreak and subsequent events involving compounded drugs, Congress has been hard at work to pass new legislation to provide FDA with the appropriate authorities for regulating compounded drugs to help make these products safe for the American public. Over a much longer period of time, efforts have been made in Congress to enhance the security of the drug supply chain and protect consumers from exposure to counterfeit, stolen, contaminated or otherwise harmful drugs.
