Medication adherence in solid organ transplant recipients
Pharmacy Practice News
Medication nonadherence following solid organ transplantation can lead to acute rejection, graft loss, infections, additional morbidity and even death. The gravity of this issue has not been lost on transplant pharmacists, who, in controlled trials, have been shown to improve both medication adherence and certain transplant-related outcomes.

Liver transplantation in recipients receiving renal replacement therapy: Outcomes analysis and the role of intraoperative hemodialysis
American Journal of Transplantation (login required)
The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease system has dramatically increased the number of recipients requiring pretransplant renal replacement therapy prior to liver transplantation. Factors affecting post-LT outcomes and the need for intraoperative RRT were analyzed in 500 consecutive recipients receiving pretransplant RRT, including comparisons among recipients not receiving IORRT, receiving planned IORRT, and receiving emergent, unplanned RRT after LT initiation.
Study: Kidney transplant beats intensive dialysis
Health Day via Philly.com
Despite short-term risks, kidney transplant patients are less likely to die prematurely than kidney failure patients receiving the most advanced dialysis treatments, new research suggests. Canadian scientists found that patients receiving donor kidneys — depending on the quality of the organ match — were up to 61 percent less likely to experience treatment failure or death over an 11-year study period than those undergoing at least 16 hours of in-home dialysis each week.
The extent and predictors of waiting time geographic disparity in kidney transplantation in the United States
Transplantation (login required)
Waiting time to deceased donor kidney transplant varies greatly across the United States. This variation violates the final rule, a federal mandate, which demands geographic equity in organ allocation for transplantation.
Data reveal risk factors for lung retransplantation
Thoracic Surgery News
Age and increased lung allocation score are among factors associated with risk of lung retransplantation, according to an analysis of data from the United Network for Organ Sharing. Of 24,194 consecutive patients who underwent lung transplantation between 1987 and 2012 and who were included in the nationwide registry, 941 (3.9 percent) underwent retransplantation.
Medication adherence in the transition of adolescent kidney transplant recipients to the adult care
Pediatric Transplantation (login required)
Non-adherence is common in adolescent and young adult kidney transplant recipients, leading to adverse graft outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine whether adherence to immunosuppressant medications changes during transition from a pediatric to an adult program within the same transplant center.
More in need of organ transplants seek their own donors
As the need for donor organs, especially kidneys, continues to outstrip the supply, more and more people are launching their own searches, with many of them turning to social media. Kidneys are by far the most commonly transplanted organ. In 2013, 16,895 kidney transplants took place nationwide. Of those, 11,161 came from a deceased donor, but more than half, 5,734, came from a living donor.
