Discovery to Product Aids University of Wisconsin in
Commercializing Patents

While the University of Wisconsin recently ranked sixth among 100 universities for the number of patents issued in 2013, bringing more of these patents to market remains a challenge. In 2013, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, the nonprofit patent and licensing organization for UW, helped with the issuing of 160 patents, according to a UW statement.More

Testing Chemotherapy's Effectiveness Early in Treatment

During early stages of chemotherapy treatment, doctors can't predict whether a patient's tumor will die or survive. But at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, a serendipitous discovery may have changed that. The resulting test, licensed to Toronto, Canada-based Rna Diagnostics Inc., analyzes RNA to assess chemotherapy's effectiveness. It would allow doctors to identify patients who aren't benefiting from a specific chemotherapy regimen and switch those patients to another treatment — instead of continuing on a path that won't lead to improved health.
