Getting Your Innovation Story to Journalists Who Care
IP Watchdog
Detractors want to change the technology transfer system regardless of how wildly successful it has been. What's more disturbing is that many want to change it back to the way it was before Bayh-Dole was enacted in 1980; back to a time when University technologies and innovations were so cumbersome to license that they simply were not licensed. The Economist has written that Bayh-Dole is the most successful piece of domestic policy legislation in the United States since the end of World War II. So what drives the ongoing calls for change?

College Student's Healing Gel Could Potentially Eliminate Use of Bandages
Medical Daily
A New York University student created a gel that could stop heavy bleeding, potentially eliminating the use of bandages. The 20-year-old junior at New York University concocted the gel, called Veti-Gel, with an NYU alum who graduated with a bachelor's degree in finance and management. Veti-Gel can heal and clot severe wounds, even organs and major arteries.

University of Rochester Got $347 Million in Research Awards in 2012
Democrat & Chronicle
While University of Rochester officials say a new report on technology commercialization at the school details a valuable community asset, some new thinking may be necessary to cope with limited federal research funding. In 2010 and 2011, the school got $461 million and $415 million, respectively — thanks to additional money from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In 2012, the university received 455 research grants worth a total of $347 million.

World 1st: Device Keeps Human Liver Alive Outside Body
Health Canal
The technology, developed at Oxford University and now being trialed at the liver transplant center at King's College Hospital as part of a controlled clinical investigation, could preserve a functioning liver outside the body for 24 hours. A donated human liver connected to the device is raised to body temperature and oxygenated red blood cells are circulated through its capillaries. Once on the machine, a liver functions normally just as it would inside a human body, regaining its color and producing bile.

Scientist Develops a Multipurpose Wonder Material to Tackle Environmental Challenges
PhysOrg
A new wonder material that can generate hydrogen, produce clean water and even create energy. Science fiction? Hardly, and there's more it can also desalinate water, be used as flexible water filtration membranes, help recover energy from desalination waste brine, be made into flexible solar cells and can also double the lifespan of lithium ion batteries. Scientists at Nanyang Technological University have succeeded in developing a single, revolutionary nanomaterial that can do all the above and at very low cost compared to existing technology.

Don't Blame the Trolls for the Patent Problem
Wired
Trolls are an easy target because they don't make anything, choosing instead to enforce patents against those who do. But curing the patent problem requires general solutions, not ones targeted just at patent trolls.

Time to Take a Stand
IP Watchdog
Some say you're too focused on making money, some say you're not focused enough, some don't believe it's moral for universities to work with industry, and many have built very successful careers launching attack after attack on Bayh-Dole and the very patent system itself. And they are not going away.
