Shapeshifters: Phones of the Future Could Morph on Demand

Scientists at the University of Bristol have developed prototype devices that could drastically change the way we interact with our smartphones and tablets. The six working prototypes, known as "Morphees," are thin, electronic displays capable of automatically changing shape to perform certain functions. Researchers say that if brought to market, the devices could usher in a new era in mobile computing, breaking down the physical barriers that have traditionally defined smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles.

U.S. Lawmaker Proposes New Criteria for Choosing NSF Grants

The new chair of the House of Representatives science committee has drafted a bill that, in effect, would replace peer review at the National Science Foundation with a set of funding criteria chosen by Congress. For good measure, it would also set in motion a process to determine whether the same criteria should be adopted by every other federal science agency.

E. coli Bacteria Can Produce Diesel Biofuel
BBC News
A strain of bacteria has been created that can produce fuel, scientists say. Researchers genetically modified E. coli bacteria to convert sugar into an oil that is almost identical to conventional diesel. If the process could be scaled up, the synthetic fuel could be a viable alternative to the fossil fuel.

Researchers Develop Synthetic Touch Arrays with Sensitivity of Human Fingertips

Humans are already starting to sympathize with robots, but U.S. and Chinese researchers want to give robotics an even more humanlike touch — quite literally. A pair of scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a colleague at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing have developed a new kind of 3-D circuit array capable of providing the touch sensitivity of a human fingertip.

Carbon Nanotube Sensor Detects Glucose in Saliva

Many people with diabetes undergo a daily regimen of tests that measure the amount of glucose in the blood stream, usually taken from finger prick samples. Needless to say, this is a time-consuming, expensive and painful process. So a cheap way of measuring blood glucose that does not require finger pricking would clearly be advantageous. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia say they have developed such a device.

University of Illinois at Chicago Writes Big Check for Startup Entrepreneurs
Following the lead of many universities across the country, the Chancellor's Innovation Fund at UIC will invest $2 million a year for a period of five years in promising companies that work to bring UIC research to market. Money will be allocated to proof-of-concept projects that apply research outputs to commercialization concepts, as well as to firms that are further along in their commercialization efforts.

Giving Batteries a Boost with Graphene and Tiny Holes
A startup spun out of Northwestern University, called SiNode Systems, is building a lithium-ion battery using a piece of graphene drilled with tiny holes. The unusual structure can boost the amount of energy that a battery's anode can hold by 10 times, and can also enable the battery to be charged much more swiftly than conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Do Patents Control Self-replicating Technologies?

Traditional patent exhaustion protects subsequent uses and resale of a patented invention. However, courts generally have not extended this protection to "making" the patented invention. That is, the law does not protect an authorized purchaser from subsequently making the patented invention without authority from the patent holder. But how will the courts apply patent exhaustion principles to technologies that are necessarily "self-replicating" as many biotechnology inventions are?
