Intellectual Property: Valuable to Every Discipline
UCLA
Intellectual property — patents, copyright, trademarks, trade secrets — plays a vital role in economic growth and prosperity. Yet outside of law schools, most American colleges provide little or no opportunity for students to receive any substantive instruction in it. As a result, students often graduate under the misimpression, no doubt shared by many of their professors, that IP is a topic of interest and relevance only to lawyers, with little connection to their own careers. That couldn't be more incorrect.
Self-Cooling Solar Cells For Better Performance and Longevity
The Optical Society via Clean Technica
Scientists may have overcome one of the major hurdles in developing high-efficiency, long-lasting solar cells—keeping them cool, even in the blistering heat of the noonday sun. By adding a specially patterned layer of silica glass to the surface of ordinary solar cells, a team of researchers led by Shanhui Fan, an electrical engineering professor at Stanford University, has found a way to let solar cells cool themselves by shepherding away unwanted thermal radiation.

Better World Project Featured Story — August 2014
AUTM
For people with compromised lung function — including ventilator-assisted patients and those with cystic fibrosis — a pseudomonas aeruginosa infection can be deadly. Fortunately, two scientists working across the country from one another joined forces to develop a molecule that prevents the toxic effects of this dangerous organism. Read more in "Lab-Produced Antibody Prevents a Deadly Bacteria From Spreading its Toxin."
Then, take a minute to enter a technology from your institution for a chance to be one of the featured stories. This video from editor Laura Savatski explains how. Or, create a customized report of the stories from your institution that may be already in the database.
