Johns Hopkins Accelerator Hits Capacity, Expands to East Baltimore

Johns Hopkins University's FastForward business accelerator is so popular that the school is expanding it to a second location. FastForward, which is part of Johns Hopkins' Whiting School of Engineering, launched last year and is already at capacity with a total of 33 startups and projects. Administrators plan to expand the program in January to accommodate the high demand among students and faculty.

Self-Cooling Solar Cells For Better Performance and Longevity

Scientists may have overcome one of the major hurdles in developing high-efficiency, long-lasting solar cells—keeping them cool, even in the blistering heat of the noonday sun. By adding a specially patterned layer of silica glass to the surface of ordinary solar cells, a team of researchers led by Shanhui Fan, an electrical engineering professor at Stanford University, has found a way to let solar cells cool themselves by shepherding away unwanted thermal radiation.

A Texas Tech University research team has discovered that low-grade cotton made into an absorbent, nonwoven mat is capable of collecting up to 50 times its own weight in oil. The team, led by Seshadri Ramkumar, a professor in the Department of Environmental Toxicology, hopes this becomes an efficient tool to help with the cleanup of oil spills.
