Temple Sees Big Growth in Research Funding, Licensing Income

Temple University had a good year for research in 2012-2013. Temple said it received $145.2 million for research in its last fiscal year, up from $120.6 million the year before. Those figures exclude Fox Chase Cancer Center, which joined the Temple University Health System last year. Including the $43.4 million in grants it received for research, Temple got $188.6 million for research in its 2012-2013 fiscal year.

University of South Florida Research Funding Tops 413 Million

University of South Florida President Judy Genshaft has announced that the university received a record $413,631,188 in research funding during the 2012-2013 academic year. The research totals beat last year's record $411.1 million by 1 percent, a significant achievement in light of the current slowdown in federal funding resulting from the budget sequestration.

Driving Innovation in Breast Cancer: Startup Challenge
The Center for Advancing Innovation
The Avon Foundation, The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and The Center for Advancing Innovation are partnering to accelerate and increase the volume of technology transfer and commercialization of federal agency and Avon Foundation grantee inventions. Using selected NCI inventions from the Department of Health and Human Services patent portfolio and an Avon Foundation grantee invention, they are organizing a "first of a kind" national, university student-based startup competition (that may also involve faculty, alumni, regional entrepreneurs and other professionals). This challenge provides an opportunity for students to develop a business plan for an innovative technology and launch a startup.
EndoInSight wins NSF I-Corps Grant
Vanderbilt University Center for Technology Transfer and Commercialization
Pietro Valdastri and Byron Smith have worked closely with Vanderbilt gastroenterologist Keith Obstein to design a device that can be attached to a standard endoscope in order to administer CO2 during colonoscopy. According to Smith, the device "uses an acid-based solution to generate an effervescent reaction that produces CO2, essentially the same chemicals found in Alka-Seltzer." To bring this new technology to market, Smith formed a new company, EndoInSight.
