A student at Boise State University in Idaho has raised more than $70,000 to begin a scholarship program for women in engineering, law and medicine in response to one of the university's professor's saying women shouldn't be recruited in those fields. Ally Orr, a senior, created a GoFundMe to fund and establish the Women in STEM, Medicine and Law Scholarship at Boise State University, which will be awarded annually to a woman studying in these fields beginning this fall.

The scientists who eventually get to peer out at the universe with NASA's powerful new James Webb Space Telescope will be the lucky ones whose research proposals made it through a highly competitive selection process. But those that didn't make the cut this time can at least know that they got a fair shot, thanks to lessons learned from another famous NASA observatory.

Each day when we reach into our wallet, we are reminded of our nation's founding fathers. While these men should be recognized for their contributions to the great American experiment, we have failed to honor so many others who also made America into what it is today: Women, who have been an integral part of creating a more equal and just society, who are at the forefront of the struggle for civil rights, voting rights and human rights, including the push for reproductive justice, and who have been innovative leaders, thinkers and doers in every field, including mathematics, science and technology.

.WOMEN and ACADEMIA
Nature
Rachel James wasn't sure whether she would be able to return to academic research after leaving it when her children were young. "Deciding to have children meant I had to become agile in dealing with the balance between family life and a career in science. Sixteen years later, I'm back in academia, and maintaining that balance has taught me a lot about myself and my attitudes to work."

The American Association of University Women provides some eye-opening statistics about the disparity of tenure between men and women and people of color. The problem with tenure isn't tenure itself, but who is awarded tenure. Unless institutions can address the barriers to tenure for underrepresented groups; hold tenured faculty accountable for discrimination, harassment and bullying in the workplace; and combat implicit bias in the tenure process, there is little hope to create the change necessary to serve students in the contemporary world.

.NEW RESEARCH
Elsevier
Elsevier, a global leader in research publishing and information analytics, is pleased to announce the launch of the most advanced 3D full female model ever available, as part of the latest addition to its 3D platform, Complete Anatomy. The US scientific workforce is not representative of the population. Barriers to entry and participation have been well-studied; however, few have examined the effect of these disparities on the advancement of science. Furthermore, most studies have looked at either race or gender, failing to account for the intersection of these variables. This analysis utilizes millions of scientific papers to study the relationship between scientists and the science they produce.

There is a leaky pipeline in psychological science: Fewer women than men and fewer Black than white individuals advance beyond early career stages. As of 2018, women made up more than 70% of psychology doctorate degree recipients, and yet only 44% of authors of psychology articles and about 50% of tenured psychology faculty were women. There is also a publication gap for minoritized individuals, based on race and disability status, and at the intersection of identities.

In her book The Disordered Cosmos, Black queer scientist Chanda Prescod-Weinstein argues that physics can be more universal. Prescod-Weinstein is an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University of New Hampshire, where she studies dark matter and particle physics. She's also on the core faculty of the university's Women's Studies department — a seemingly unusual combination that hints at the multifaceted approach she brings to her work.

A new organization called the Association for Mathematical Research has ignited fierce debates in the math research and education communities since it was launched last October. Its stated mission is "to support mathematical research and scholarship" — a goal similar to that proclaimed by two long-standing groups: the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. In recent years the latter two have initiated projects to address racial, gender and other inequities within the field.
