The evolution of an industry: Despite declines, manufacturing still key to Wisconsin's River Valley region

It’s unusual to read any good news about manufacturing these days. Like a dying star, the industry has been in slow collapse since its peak in 1979, when national employment reached 19.5 million. The numbers ebbed and flowed with each economic recession and resurgence over the next two decades, dropping to around 15.4 million in 2003 after the mild recession in 2001 and plunging to a low of around 11.5 million in 2010 after the Great Recession.
