Southern Arizona rabies advisory
Arizona Department of Health Services
The Arizona Departments of Health Services, Agriculture, and Game and Fish want to alert Arizonans to an increase in rabid skunks in two southern counties. Since the beginning of 2014, 13 rabid skunks have been identified in Pima and Santa Cruz counties. In 2013, a total of 17 rabid skunks were identified in these areas.
People who are bitten or otherwise exposed to a potentially rabid animal should contact their healthcare provider immediately to get preventative medication. While rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, preventive medication can prevent the symptoms.

Liposome-bupivacaine showing promise in postoperative pain management

 Postoperative pain management is necessary to prevent mortality and to improve general body function after surgery. Opioids are commonly used to reduce postsurgical pain. However, they are associated with many side effects. The potential to be able to provide a long duration of analgesic effect with a single drug dose at the time of surgery is considered as important. In a recent study in the Journal of Pain Research, a formulation of bupivacaine and liposome was developed to be applied for a prolonged postsurgical pain relief, which was less toxic as compared to free bupivacaine.
Florida lawmakers propose reforms to abusive audits that undermine patient care, pharmacists and state revenue

Two Florida lawmakers have introduced legislation in the Florida State Senate and Florida House of Representatives, respectively, that would apply common sense standards to pharmacy audits and rein-in abusive practices that are harming patient care, small-business community pharmacies and state revenue, the National Community Pharmacists Association said.
CVS: Tobacco products gone by Oct. 1

Better package design helps prevent drug errors

Efforts by manufacturers to improve the way they label and package drugs — prompted by new guidelines issued by the FDA just over a year ago — have been largely successful, according to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices.
