Coming soon: USP standard on handling hazardous drugs

Compliance with the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) chapter <800> is on the horizon, and pharmacists everywhere should know what to expect with these standards for handling hazardous drugs in their facilities. “Even though <800> isn’t finalized yet, pharmacies need to make preparations now,” Patricia Kienle, BSPharm, MPA, FASHP, Director of Accreditation and Medication Safety at Cardinal Health Innovative Delivery Solutions, told Pharmacy Today. She presented on the topic at APhA2015 in San Diego.

FDA considers compounding restrictions on four drugs, including acetaminophen

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is preparing to ask one of its newest advisory committees to decide if some compounding pharmacies should be allowed to make four drugs, including the widely used painkiller acetaminophen.

New Accreditation Process Available for Compounding Pharmacies

United Compounding Management (UCM) announced a strategic partnership with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) to enhance the process and standards of accreditation for compounding pharmacies. NABP, a national, impartial professional organization whose key mission is focused on supporting state boards of pharmacy in protecting public health, will be administering the United Compounding Credentialing and Accreditation Program (UCAP) exclusively for UCM.

Keeping a closer eye on post-discharge planning

Regulatory and financial pressures are forcing hospitals to ramp up their post-discharge strategy initiatives. Some of the pressure is coming from the Affordable Care Act (ACA); Section 2717 requires that hospitals report the results of their efforts to prevent hospital readmissions. Whether it’s patient education and counseling, comprehensive discharge planning or post-discharge reinforcement by an appropriate health care professional, federal officials want to know what hospitals are doing to keep patients out of the hospital—and how many health care dollars are being saved in the process, experts noted.
